Default Checking CEL codes

i have a 98 civic dx and i was wondering if there is a way for me to check what code or codes casued my CEL to come on with out going to a shop.

Just go look - the connectors are essentially in the same place. The 6th gen connector is located in a green rubber 'cap' a little higher up into the dash area.
