Default carbon syncros?

I am buying another transmission soon cause my current one is dying. I am also thinking about buying some carbon syncros for it to make it stronger and hopefully allow me to be able to shift resonably quick with out worrying about grinding. I can buy some from gear speed for about $100-120 but it is only 2,3,and 4. Is this worth it?

1st and 5th gear don't have synchros from the factory. What kind of carbon are these? Carbon steel?

Its gear-speed.com im buying them for a 95 si tranny,

Our synchros have a carbon coating versus your stock metal teeth. This allows for quicker shifting at high RPM's and reduces high RPM grinding that is common in Honda transmissions. The Carbon coating acts as a braking material and stops the gear faster during shifts versus your standard synchro ring.

Worth doing?

i dont drive them often but when i do they are driven hard , i did the install myself and as far as being a first timer if yuo got patience mechanically inclined and time and the tools you should be ok just remember how everything came apart i highly recomend a helms book during this process order a seal/bearing kit while u are at it bout 200 bucs if ya got a hook up judging by your screen name im thinkinh h22 tranny 1 thing to lookfor when you take it apart is the hub and slider alot of people think it is their syncros but actually the hub and slider is worn causing tranny to block out at higher rpms

good luck

what?
reverse is the only gear without a syncro, how do you shift into 5th at freeway speeds without a grind if it dosent have syncros? also how would you downshift into first without a grind?

Gears 1-5 do have a synchronizer. From the looks of the picture on slhondaparts.com they do.

I miss-typed. I meant to say 1st and reverse don't have a synchro, and 5th probably never needs to be replaced. I could be wrong about 1st, but I checked http://www.slhondaparts.com and I didn't see one. There aren't many trannys out there that have one on 1st, and since I can only 2-1 shift when going very slow or stopped, I assumed Honda was the same.

I know you shouldn't shift to 1st from a roll, but if you didn't have a synchro on 1st, wouldn't it grind when you shift into 1st even from a dead stop? Reverse I doubt has one, it grinds everytime if you don't enter another gear before it.

If the input shaft was still spinning, yes.

1st is definitely synchronized. Only reverse is not.

Well, color me wrong. I could have sworn 1st didn't have a synch. Sorry for the missinformation.

im really excited about getting these and getting them in. Everything transmission is usually ungodly expensive. I was thinking synchros would be alot more than they were.
