Car Starting prob. Relay? help me diagnose..
ok i'm having some starting problems.
i'll try and lay it out as clear as I can, feels to me like it might be a relay of some sort
not sure though, as i've never had problems with relays before.
OK so over the last few months my car will randomly
not start at the first turn of the key.
fuel pump primes, but when I turn the key to start the ignition, it just clicks and
nothing happens. Engine does not crank at all. it only gets one click then silence, no matter how long I hold the key down.
Basically if I just kept trying it over and over eventually(after maybe 3-4 tries or more it varies) it would just start up fine.
About half the time the car would start first try also without problems..
so very random.
Well today it was very bad, took lots of tries to get the engine to crank,
then once it DID, it would crank, but would not turn over.
I got it to crank 3 times then it FINALLY started.
Soooo, yeah lend me some insight if you can thanks

I think your starter might be about to crap out on you.
Have you noticed anything else? Like it only gives you trouble when it is wet out, or when the engine is warm?
What is the condition of you battery? how are all your grounds?
Hope that helps.
Cheers and good luck.

sounds like a bad starter or the starter ground maybe loose, or the actual start is off the transmission also messing up the ground contact for the starter. take the start out and have it tested at autozone, pepboys etc....far as i know its a free service. this will tell you if the starter is bad or loosing its life.
if its in perfect condition then make sure the negative wire connection on the starter is clean and not loose, as well as tighten down the starter to the transmission following the torque specs.
be very careful you do not overtighten the negative starter wire. it is easily broken off due to it being attached to the plastic part of the solenoid,<<<which you can not buy separately.

Ignition coil. When it is going out it will be intermitent. Then it will stop working all together. Get a used one. New ones arent worth the price unless you go aftermarket.

I've got some extra dizzy parts lying around.
starter though huh..
I guess I should get it tested,
how accurate are those autopart store tests though?
If only it wasn't such a random occurence.
its been cold lately, so maybe thats affecting it.
the worst time it ever happened was after driving through some heavy rain then letting it sit for a minute, it barely started after that.
But then I drove it around all day and it started up every time!
All my grounds are tight, battery is good, terminals are tight.
i'll examine the starter closer tomorrow.
