Default Car overheating!

I have a 1993 Honda Civic Si bone stock. The only modifications are done to the suspension.

My car is now overheating. Overheating as in the temp gauge will go all the way to the top of the line if I am idling. If I drive it’s ok, and it goes down to where it normally is.

Someone mentioned it may be my thermostat. I honestly don’t know how to change that out nor do I know where to get a new one from.

Also I just checked my engine out and it looks like there is water leaking from a hose connected to the bottom of the intake manifold near the injectors.

Any advice?

wow man. if one of your hoses is leaking that could be a bad sign...

you can get a thermostat from an autozone or somewhere.. they are not really hard to change. What color is the fluid that you are leaking from that hose?

thermostat is a quick, easy, and cheap repair. do yourself a favor and pick up a $10 haynes manual from an autoparts store. at the same time you can pick up the thermostat (~$12) and some coolant. the manual will also have a trouble shooting guide. the hose that goes to the head is most likely a water hose. check your coolant level. i bet its low and causing you to over heat

I actually have a whatever manual the best one there is available. Just that I can't find where it shows how to change the thermostat.

I had a 91 hatch that would over heat, and it was the radiator fan. It would either not come on, or come on very weakly at intermittant times. Check to make sure the fan is coming on.

if its your fan you could check to see if its working by jumping the fan switch. i also advise you to get a thermostat from honda cause autozone ones are cheap and aren't adequate for your motor (meaning it might open up when your motor gets hotter than normal). also to change the thermostat is very easy. just follow the hose coming from the bottom of your radiator and there is a housing at the end w/ 2 bolts. get those 2 bolts out and changed the thermostat. here's a writeup i found:

my car did the same shiet before. when its idling, the temp gauge goes all the way up and when its driving it goes back to normal. u might have air in ur radiator which u will need to flush it. it might not be ur thermostat but could be also.

it happen when i was going on a 1hr 20 mins road trip. if u see no leakin or anything, then its probably air in ur radiator. i open the radiator cap while the car is still hot but engine off, so all the air and coolant can come out. do it with a rag on top of the cap. when it all comes out, refill it and see what happen.

Knocturnal, I was about to replace my fan since it wasn't working, but I decided to trade the car in, so I unfortunately, don't know the full answer as to if that would help or not. Simply if there is a problem with the electric before the fan, then it would be a new fan for nothing. I feel your pain though, I delt with it for over a year. I just made sure that I pulled over and shut hte car off in heavy traffic. Makes trips a little longer, but the reason it gets cooler when you are moving is that the air is moving through the rad fins, which isn't happening when you are stopped because the fan isn't working. Might use a voltmeter to see if the fan plug is getting juice, and start from there. If it is getting juice, get a new fan, if it isn't getting juice, you probably have an electric problem some where else.
I hope you get it fixed soon.

Mine's just the opposite. It heats up at sustained highway speeds--especially w/ the AC on. It cools back down when it's in stop and go.

Nothing funny going on in the oil, so I've ruled out headgasket. I think I'll try the thermostat 'cuz it's so cheap.

I had the same problem you had a few weekback. my problem was that i was low on coolent and that ment there was airpockets in the lines and that will cause it to over heat, stated before. If yours is leaking put some more coolent in it and see if that help, if it does and its a hoes that is leaking replace it. if that doesn't work i would check the Themostat.

I added coolant to my radiator yesterday. I didn't have a chance to drive it around to see if it still overheats. I'm going to try that today and see what happens.
