Default Car not starting - fuel pump not getting power

Car not starting. This happens every couple of weeks or so. It will try to start and never successfully turn over. What I did notice is that when it has this problem, when I put the key in the ignition on the 2nd click I do not hear the fuel pump.
The fuel pump can however, be heard on the 2nd click when it is not having this problem.

What this tells me is that the fuel pump is not getting power for some reason everytime. What has been the fix for this, has been basically playing with this ignition. You have to turn the key to click # 2 and then take the key out and keep doing this untill you hear the fuel pump turn on and then, when you do hear the fuel pump, you can start the car right up.

Main relay/fuel pump relay.

It's an electrical box that is near your hood release lever under the dash.

It will have a little black case that's bolted to the car with maybe two 10mm bolts. Inside is a brownish electrical box.

You will buy the main relay from Honda and it will come complete with it's own black case and arm for bolting it right in.

Two 10mm bolts and unplugging are all that stand in your way from swapping that thing out y0!

I was having this problem, and it wasn't my relay. What was happening was the big wire going to the starter was shorting out to the starter casing occasionally, and when hitting the ignition to start, the only thing that would happen was my radiator fan running. I just put a few washers under the connection to the starter so the wire had more clearance from the casing...starts up every time now. =D

Me and a friend are having a similar problem on an lsvtec project. We cannot get the fuel pump circuit to have power.

No luck at all. I'm going to check the relay and report back tomarrow..

yeah it's the main relay, I had this problem 2 weeks ago and when I turn the key to pos 2 I don't hear the power going to the fuel pump. This always seemed to happeen on hot days too. Changed main relay and no problem since.

Yup it'll start off happening on hot days and then get gradually worse.

does evrything else work when you turn the key to on? It could be the ignition is bad or has a loose wire.

Well we switched out the main relay.. still the same problem. By the way, the main relay was on the passenger side of the 96-98 civic.

Any other ideas?

My girls' 93 civic started having the same symptoms that my Civic was giving with the car not wanting to start because the fuel pump was not being activated.
Swapped the main relay and PROBLEM SOLVED!

you don't have to actually swap it. just open it up and desolder all the joints on the board and resolder them back. just becareful of the 3 diodes when desoldering because they will fall through. if they do then you have to take the board off. that happened to me but it all works now.

I have a similar problem as well. Sometimes when I turn the key to the second position I can hear the fuel pump or something start humming and then stop and sometimes I don't hear anything. When I don't hear anything, my check engine light comes on. So to get the car to start I go under the hood to the fuse box and wiggle it around a little until I hear that humming sounds again and then I look at the check engine light and it's out. After all that I can then start up the car. It got to the point that it would die if I hit a bump. So I checked the wires under the fuse box and fixed one that was starting to come loose. Thought it was fixed until I hit another bump and it did it again. This time, all I had to do was tap or slightly move the relay for the radiator fan in the fuse box to get it to start. Then every little bump I would hit the car would die so I ended up wedging that relay with a couple pieces of wood chips and now it starts and runs fine. Since I don't know the problem or can figure it out I'm taking it in today to have it looked at. Any ideas as to what you might think it is?

oh, also. When the car does not want to start, it seems like everything resets once I get it started again. The lights and that work but the radio does not. For example, if the car doesn't start and I wiggle the fuse box to get it to start, once started I have to reset all my radio stations and functions. Don't know if that helps or makes any difference but I thought I would add that info.

Any suggestions would be great. TIA
