If the cap is old and the inner prongs that the rotor hits are scraped badly and have build up would your car still start?

Depending on how bad it is, it may or may not start, either way the car wouldn't run well like that so replace the cap. If your car won't start and you want to see if it's getting spark, pull a plug and turn the engine over and look for a spark.
