Default Can u adjust timing belt without taking off mounts?

I have similar post about what happened....point is....b16a2 engine i have timing belt jumped a tooth....afraid internals were damaged.....

question is.....can i fix that jumped tooth....without taking off engine mounts or engine itself?.....what would i have to losen up...just tensioner? remove belt....fix cam gears and pulley to TDC....place belt...and re-tighten tensioner?

i want to just adjust it....set timing at TDC....(i know i should change belt) but other plans in mind...b20v...more info on other post similar..do a compression check to see if any internals (head) were damaged....i want to use head on b20v.

You can leave it on the mounts as far as I know. I usually just take it off the mount and jack the one side up though. It doesn't take that long.

You can leave the mount on.

If it was me I would consider replacing the belt.

the reason i dont want to replace the belt is because i just want to run a compression test with timing set at OEM specs.......compression test should let me know if head is good..if it is...then i will take complete head off....and swap in a stock low hp b20b with b16 head....not for racing...not for revving over 7k....just need a daily right now...then further down save money to fully build the b16 or b20 for boost.

then unless i can use that same b16 belt on a b20v setup...then i will purchase one....

In that case, I would try to reuse the belt too.

The B16 belt is too short for a B20.

the 96+ GSR belt should work for the b20v correct? or b18b?

is the crankshaft pulley necessary to set motor at tdc? i dont have proper tools for that....on a manual i have says pulley has white mark....my crank pulley has red mark (center) and 2 lines on either side which i believe its + or - 2 degrees. is there a way to align the crankshaft pulley to TDC without taking it off?

can i just align the crank pulley "key" to point straight up to set No. 1 piston at TDC?

You should have a white mark just to the right of the red marks. It may have worn off. Look for a notch. You should not have to remove anything. In order to see the key you need to remove pulley bolt. If you can remove the pulley bolt, the pulley should slide right off. But you don't have to do any of that. I don't think jumping one tooth will cause any damage. Does the motor run?

you can adjust it without taking that mount off, however to replace it you have to take the mount off.

if it jumped a tooth make sure to inspect it for any damage.

to find TDC on the crank, just line up the pointers on the gear and the inner timing cover. since you have to take off the lower outer cover to adjust it anyways.

Why do you suspect engine damage? is it because the belt jumped a tooth? i doubt the engine would get damaged at all from just jumping one tooth. the belt should be replaced before you drive it again though, even if it looks good.

f it jumped a tooth make sure to inspect it (THE BELT) for any damage.

clear now

thanx alot....all of u that responded this is what i done.......from what it seems....the crank pulley white mark aligns with the pointer on the lower cover. The cam gears are both pointing up and the 2
marks - - right next to each other like that. I then tried the timing gun, i still cant get the red mark align with the pointer...Right now i have the dizzy at the middle from eye sight and following the top bolt whole........when i checked timing with the gun set @ 16 degrees.....the lower cover pointer points almost right at the center...prob. closer to the white mark.......seems like i would have to twist my dizzy all the way (not sure if advanced or retard so the red mark can get closer to pointer......but idk if twisting dizzy all the way is good?

Can an abnormal idle cause the timing gun to read incorrectly...my idle sometimes stays at 1100, 900, 350....pm.....

Damn....i just wrote a damn Essay....

yes an abnormal idle will make it hard to time with the timing light.

and you have to jump the service connector to keep the ecu from adjusting the timing.

get your idle around 750 rpms steady.

and make sure the engine is fully warmed up.

time the motor with the light at that point.

if the radiator fan kicks on, then wait for it to turn back off before adjusting anymore (you want to time it with no extra load on the motor)
