Can royal purple harm a civic tranny?
Im changing my tranny form a 99 cx to a hx, I used 10w-30 royal purple in the old cx tranny. A few months later it doesnt grind but a bearing inside is done. Now im putting in a good hx tranny but dont want to harm it by putting royal purple in there. Is it best to use hondas fluid?

i have always used mobil 1 in my trannys and never had a problem yet still but if its a high milage trans then i would not use synthtic oil bc it takes all the old oil and coating off the bearings and if there old and raped on then they will be most likely to go out! but just a imput

Thats what I was thinking about it being synthetic. Does anyone know of a good additive? I dont use it to race or anything its my daily driver.

honda recomends 10-30 oil why anything else that cost more? would they stear you wrong? never have i had a problem

well, yeah I could just put the basic stuff, but I want to use somthing better that oe requirements. Im sure the better stuff is just as much as honda wants to rape me for.

Look again.... You CAN use motor oil for for a short amount of time NOT as a normal tranny fluid.
Motor oil and HONDA tranny oil are the same consistency....Virgin Olive Oil is close to it too.
My point is, the additives in the fluid make it suitable for the application.
Use TRANNY fluid for you transmission, NOT MOTOR oil. Motor oil is for when you don't have tranny fluid and you need to get the car moving from the shop or whatever.
Besides Royal purple is only like $.38 cheaper than Pennzoil Synchromesh. It's about $7.XX a quart and you'd need too. You don't change it as frequent as motor oil....spend the money, get the correct stuff.

Thats exactly what I was wondering! So the honda fluid does have different additives than just plain motor oil. What makes the penzoil better? where can I get it. Never really heard of it.

Not exactly sure the in chemical differences, but they are there...
Pennzoil is easy to buy without going to HONDA dealer or majestichonda.com or something to get it...Works well.
Autozone for less than $8 a quart and you'll need two....
Once you put it in, you'll definitely notice smoother shifting if you've been running on motor oil this whole time...

here in cali you cant buy **** if its good, maybe it has some kind of harsh for the enviroment type of thing. Too many tree huggers here. But I will look.

In the earlier years of the eg chassis they did call for motor oil or rather a "SAE grade 5W-30 (or whatever it is)" I've seen in the back of my owners manual for my 92 dx hatch where it calls for motor oil for the trans. I've neem runnin castrol non-synthetic 5w-30 i believe for over 2k miles and have been perfect and my tranny has 237k miles on it (and its boosted now with a act 6 puck). In the later year and into the ek chassis i think honda started calling for there honda mtf fluids or equivalent to there standards.

im boosted and runing 10w30 motor oil and i have ran the tranny atleast 15k and still no grinds. it used to be recomended, its only 2 quarts u cant get ripped by much. but ive heard when u put syncromesh in k20 tranny's they end up toast as it does not help gear grind at all

I've been using Redline MTL/MT-90 for 8 years, and don't plan to switch - ever!
In that time, I've seen all sorts of snake oils come n' go...
I put 178,000 miles on a D16 tranny with Redline oil and it shifts like the day I bought it!
I'm running Redline MT-90 in my B16A2-EJ7 tranny now and its working GREAT too, soooo...
Your call, but that's what I've used - with long-term success!

I also am Redline MT90 user... stuff works great. Royal makes some good stiff though

The best choice is always going to be Honda MTF. All the race cars i've dealt with use 100% Honda MTF.

Use Honda MTF if you can get it. Otherwise most other cross-listed brands are o.k. (I'm not here to brand battle). Stay away from REDLINE products with Honda transmissions.
