can I turn this over?
If the engine is all mounted up and the shift linkage is set up can I turn my engine over to see if it starts before putting the axles in?

so the transmission has no oil in it then?
i'm not familiar with the inner workings of a honda tranny enough to be sure, but even at idle i'd imagine that there would be things spinning.. thus they'd need lubrication.

From my understanding is all he wants to do is start the motor, techniqually nothing should be spinning, tranny wise, unless he goes into gear.

yeah your concept makes sense... instead of finishing the swap, you can test now to search for problems (or possibly a bad motor)
i dont see any adverse effects of starting the motor as is. just dont try out any gears.

even though you're in neutral, arent there part of the transission that are spining when the clutch is engaged? like if you have the front end of you car up in the air with the motor running in neutral , the wheels will still move a little bit.

We like to call that "gravity" here in the states. It's perfectly fine to fire it up and see if it's working as long as you don't go into gear.

You will be okay (for a short time) as long as your foot is in the clutch all the way. Without the axles in, there is no tranny fluid (and if their was, it would shoot out of your axle holes once you let out the clutch). If you have any old axles, jsut remove the shafts & boots and plug the transmission with the inner joints. If not just keep your foot on the clutch for all it's worth.
Personaly, I would wait because friction in the pilot bearing will cause the mainshaft to spin no matter what you do.

make sure the oil level in the motor is correct (of course) and then start it up - will not hurt anything unless you engage the clutch and any gearing.
