Default Burning Oil - B16

Hi all,

I have a 2000 SiR B16A2 motor in my car...it burns about 1L (10w30) every 5K. This car is a daily driver and it's driven normal (rarely ever redlining, etc). I might redline it 3-4 times for a few seconds in the 5000KM, so its not beat on. I was told that this is normal for an sir motor. Can someone confirm this? I was also told this is normal if u beat on the car a lot but this is not the case here.

Would the motor burn less if I use different oil? 5w30? synthetic? I'm not sure if gas has anything to do with it but I always run 91 Super. Does the motor maybe need a new gasket?

Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

more often than not high revving engines will burn oil. I've had a couple of different experiences.

I've had non vtec D series that burned HUGE amounts of oil, a VTEC D series that burned a moderate amount of oil. I've had a GSR that burned no oil, a B16 that burned no oil, and I now have a B16 that burns a tiny bit of oil and an F20C that burns a little tiny drop of oil (totally normal).

Dont worry about it. 1 liter of oil every 5k miles is NOTHING. 1 liter is 1.057 quarts. So lets say 1qt of oil. That's a very clean running B16A.

What does VTEC have to do with it? Why is burning oil part of VTEC? I've owned 158K B18C that ran like it came off the showroom floor that burned virtually 0 oil. I dont think it even used .25qt every oil change. There's really no engine that burns literally no oil, BTW. About .10 to .5qt every 3k miles or so is pretty normal for almost any car.

Thanks for the responses,

I find this odd...does anyone ever mention this when selling a car? If I forget to check my oil in 2-3 weeks, usually the oil level is below the minimum and the motor can easy blow on me.

You drive 5k miles in 2-3 weeks?

Wait do you mean 5K kilometers? Every 3125 miles?

You said it burns 1L every 5k...how is your motor below the minimum every 2-3 weeks? Do you drive between 3k and 5k miles every 2-3 weeks?

When normal people sell hondas, they dont usually mention anything about oil consumption..maybe because they dont notice. When tuners sell hondas, they usually mention how much oil it burns.
