Is it possible? To build a fully cali street legal civic that performs decently?

I was thinking of picking up a US spec B16 and putting on an Edelbrock turbo system, dropping some poundage however I could and find any little non-smog affecting bolt on or method I could to finagle some extra power out.

Any thoughts? I'm a newbie when it comes to Hondas.

you will have to investigate parts that are CARB complaint. California is a pain in the ***. I think your best bet is, to get the b16 BAR'd by the state ref.

The goal is to try to run in the mid 12s on street tires and premium unleaded if that is remotely possible.

get two motors, one for smog, and one for daily use. bone stock, and a fully built engine. it's hard for them to tell if you have cams, etc, since it's all internal and run that edelbrock setup, with a ported edelbrock manifold. then you would probably be looking at a car within the 13's high 12's

Best bet would be to go with a Jackson Racing supercharger on a GSR engine. Make sure engine is at least same year or newer as your chassis.

Yeah that is the catch, I dunno how easy that will be with a 2000 Civic, and what the price will be on that bad boy.

I really don't have the means for that one man.

Space/being moved around a lot kinda throws a wrench in that.

With a B16A2 you will NOT have to get it BAR'd as long as the swap is from a 2000 Civic aswell. For a B18C1 you will have to get a 2000 or 2001 swap. Yeah it's a bit more price wise but you will have more power and it is also basically a drop in swap minus a mount bracket and linkage (could be wrong). I'm also in California and will be doing a GSR swap in my 96 hatch with a supercharged GSR engine, trying to do it right aswell.

In that case what about a K24 swap?

k-series swap is going to be difficult to get bard in cali. something to do with the fuel return line to the gas tank and possible evap sensor on the gas tank. research google on this.

I did some more homework basically my best bet is either a GSR or a B16 US spec from an SI.

What is a good site to purchase the engines from in you alls opinion?
I think the supercharger and GSR option is the best/most affordable route that I can take with this whole thing, but I don't think that I am going to have a 12 second car, I might be lucky to reach the 13s thanks to our stupid smog laws :/

Skip the B16 and get a B18C1. Trust me.

I haven't been able to find a company that has USDM B series VTEC motors, only JDM.
Hopefully someone here knows.

Yeah I am kinda thinking about that. I think that finding a USDM 2000 or later GSR that is in good shape is going to be a TALL order.

Thanks, they have a B18B in my price range. Its not a C I know, but I really don't think that I am going to have much choice when it comes to engines when it comes to a 2000 civic.

i will offer you get the GSR from junkyard, this way it's a valid USDM motor. Get a decent rebuild on it, and you'll be good to go.

JDM motor's in Cali are a pain in the *** to deal with at the Ref. Too many headaches. This way you get all the proper items too, like wiring, ecu, tranny... You'll be looking at the ball park 1800-2400 bucks.

i did a b18 from japan and got all the cali legal stuff for the same engine and it was easy to ref here also im going to do a jrsc and that should be fun and legal

so tell me why cali ref will not bar a b16a "JDM" motor in a 88-91 honda? So what you're saying is you get the JDM long bloack swap the intakemanifold and run which ecu? the ref checked my ecu when i did my toyota a year ago.

That is a decent price, im just curious what would you do in my situation? From start to finish as far as the car goes.

Doubt you'll see 12's but it's a start.

If you want to autox it, start with light mods. Spring/shocks, sway bar, and just drive the hell out of it.


Not sure how it will do turbo, but, a simple ITR setup should be quite fun.

SCCA rules are tough, and I really dont want to modify it for the sake of modifying it, I want to have some competitive goal in mind

Different classes, for different mods. You wont be in class with all of the built/bad *** cars.


Winning is cool, but you need to get the expereince first. Just play with it, with the D in there, while your getting all of the stuff ready for the swap.
