buddy got new car, no tach! when to shift? ( search used)
tommorow i'm gonna go look what car he has exactly, its a 98 sedan with a manual tranny, doesnt say on the back whether its an ex/ls/hx/cx etc... and its dark right now and he doesnt know where to look for the engine code so i dont even know if its a y8 or y7 engine.
tommorow i might have more info but anyway, the dude never drove stick before so i got to teach him, i have a cx hatchback in my gargage of the same year, and i know that cx's have very long gears, i can pull 40's ( km) in first and i think i reached 90-100 km in second but i may be bullshiting since i havent driven it in over a year, but anyway
can someone please tell me so that we wont fry his tranny at what speed does the maximum horsepower happen? hes never gonna race it so he will never need to push it to redline, assuming its a d16y7 engine?
i just need the first 3 gears really just so that i wont fry them myself when teaching him.
thanks

First off your not gonna fry anything "McFly".
But a EX is 7200 fuelcut
Any other model is 6800 fuelcut
Or so I remember
GoodLuck

If he still has the owners manual you can check in there. It tells you the miles/hour that you should shift gears at. There is also a post on here that you can search for (I'm tired right now, sorry) that will give you shift points for each model of civic and where you will redline. Hope this helps...it worked for me.
Edit: If you can wait until tomorrow I can post it for you out of my owner's manual (2000 Cx hatch) or send you a pm...let me know. Rule of thumb> first: 15-20mph; second: 20-40mph; third: 35-50. This is for the d16y7 engine.

Umm, just go by engine sound, shift at 10, 25, 40, and wahtever you feel like from there, thats what I do normally.

Just look to see if it has a VTEC solenoid or not. If it does, it is an EX/D16Y8.
I have a DX w/D16Y7. This is how I shift...
1st--20mph
2nd--30mph
3rd--40mph
4th--50mph
I get over 300MPG even with getting on it quite a bit.
I can pull to about 65 mph in 2nd before I bounce off the rev limiter.

The car does not shudder whatsoever as long as you're easy on the gas.
The only way you can induce shudder is if you're heavy on the throttle and low in the RPM.
Take it nice and easy, and you can shift smoothly at a low RPM all day long. Of course going up hills and such is different, but you catch my drift.
I'm broke, so every penny saved on gas is a penny earned.

Re: buddy got new car, no tach! when to shift? (7thGear)
it should have a rev limiter on it. my 98 DX hatch didnt come with a tach. but I hit the rev limiter a few times on it as well as the rev limiter on my b16b with a tach. As long as its stock you shouldnt hurt the motor becasue the rev limiter will kick in and you will know when it does...

the easiest way to see if its a vtec is where the spark plug wires are, if their in the front of the block its a vtec, if their in back (by the firewall) its a non vtec

ummm, no. it's a 98 civic, so its a d16, all will be on the front. since he has no tach, he doesn't have an ex, so he either has a dx or lx, although i think the lx has a tach on it. so with a dx or lx, he has a d16y7, non vtec.

just ping it off the revlimiter and look at the speed. you won't break anything.
or: http://home.cinci.rr.com/mistab0ne/tranny.html 92-95 gear ratios are the same as 96-00 & http://www.f-body.org/gears

Re: buddy got new car, no tach! when to shift? (jwn7)
alright, its not an ex, the engine is a regualr ol y7 :D ( atleast the crappy intake manifold is what gave it away)
it also says "special edition" on the back, but i dunno what that means, i'll just assume its a dx/ls
it has power locks but not power windos, and comes with a/c, but no cd or casette player o_O!!
so using the site mentioned in the above post you guys think i should be safe using those numbers?
also.. this is kind of off topic, but can someone run outside and measure the diamter of their tire + wheel? he got brand new all season tires on them, but they look kind of big to me, bigger than most civics, and definatly bigger than the stockers my cx had on them back in the day, i'm just worried that the larger wheel might throw off the speedo, and were gonna end up going alot faster than we think we are ... heh :D
cuz the gap is only one inch! yet the car sits pretty damn high off the ground ( 7-8 inches)
thanks!!

is this a dx tranny or ex tranny?
my d16y7's 2nd gear certainly doesn't go that high on my ex tranny
