Default Break-in oil vs non break-in oil

From what I've read, when doing a engine build you want to change the oil more frequently in the beginning to check for any metal shavings etc.

I'm just swapping in a JDM engine with around 30k-40k miles on it.
Do the same principals apply or should I just dump in some long life synthetic and call it a day?

Thanks,
Jon
