Best D to D swap?
I have a stock y7 and I am wanting to swap it for a Vtec motor. I'm going to stick with the D series but I'm uncertain which would be the best platform for boost, also needs to pass California smog. Which is no joke out here.
What do you guys think?
JDM D15b?
USDM Y8? Or just boost the Y7 (kinda high miles though)
Any other options you guys can think of, or have had experience with?
I have very little experience w/D's mostly just messed with B's and K's.
Thanks

Re: Best D to D swap?
I would suggest running a d16z6. The y series of the d series engines always had rod bearing problems because of oiling issues. This is related to a lack luster oil pump. If you shim it that should help but the z6 is just a nicer motor to work with in my opinion.

All good points, however the OP isn't going to be able to pass california emissions with a Z6. From an emissions standpoint a D16Y8 is going to be the most hassle free way to go.

D16Z6 if you weren't in CA, but it looks like D16Y8 is what you're gonna have to go with.
Or you could put a D16Y8 head on the D16Y7 for less money.
What 1kleenef said is true about the rod bearings on the D16Y's.

As has been covered, the Y's oil pumps suck, which is the primary reason that most people say the D16Z6 is better.

I would go with the y8, and the y8 head has a better combustion chamber with quench zones and to me would be the better choice. I don't know about the laws in some states but isn't illegal to swap a motor from a older car to a newer car or at least from a older generation to a newer one

go with the y8. you can't legally smog a z6, since it must be from the same year or newer.
also a mini-me is also out of the question, since that ain't smog legal either.
if you're gonna turbo, your only legal choices are the Greddy kit or Edelbrock kit.

Re: Best D to D swap?
So I guess Y8 it is, or I might just boost my Y7. Thanks everyone for the support on this topic. I hate the stupid laws in CA, but there are ways around that. Just cost some $$.
Just to clarify, why would a Y8 head on my Y7 block (mini me) not pass smog, if I use a Y8 ecu and harness? Will the Z6 oil pump bolt up direct to a Y block?

not to thread jack, but i have a d15z1, going turbo, i'm in cali, but i really dont care about smog, i can get around it. should i slap on a y8 head? or just junk the whole motor and get a z6 or a y8? whatever i can get my hands on. keep in mind that my d15z1 only has 50k on it.
