Baffled by this CEL
I know that it means the ecu is throwing codes when the CEL is blinking, but the CEL in my friend's 01 EX blinks 10 times whenever she starts the car, and goes off after that. Is that a code, if so, is that code 10? It would seem to me that 10 would be a long, not 10 shorts. Anyone?

How does the car run? I'm not sure if its supposed to blink when you start the car up, thought it only did that when you had the service connector jumped....

Has the car been worked on/touched under the hood recently?

^^ Basically says blinking CEL while the car is running is caused by random misfires. Try doing a search in the archives for "blinking CEL" quite a few results come up.
Yeah, edit.
Basically every thread in that search that has something to do with the CEL coming on and blinking at random is caused by misfiring. May want to start off with the customary plugs/wires/cap/rotor and go from there.

Thanks. She just bought it from a dealer, so I'm not sure when the last time it was worked on would be. I'll take a look at the thread. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Start with plugs/wires/cap/rotor and go from there. Check the timing as well. If its still doing it after those, look at fuel delivery. Check/change the fuel filter. Check injectors/check fuel pump.

I'm a ********. It's the maint. req'd light. How do I find out what needs to be serviced? Or is this normal for the 01-up civics? I own a 95 ex, so I'm not too familiar with these. Thanks for the help guys.

The maint. light just reminds you to take it to the dealer so they can rip you off. Just check the owners manual and make sure to keep up on regular, obvious maintenance with it.

change the oil. my wife's 02 civic flashes if you go over mileage. i change it every 3000 but got behind last month and went 800 over. at about 500 mile over 3000 it started flashing when the car was started. try the oil change then reset your light. now to reset the light put your key in the ignition. hold the trip reset button. as you hold the button, turn key to run position until light goes out.

Re: Baffled by this CEL (HellbillY)
well since it's the maint required light.. it's just that last time you took your car in for maintenance they forgot to reset it..... after every oil change or whatever it's supposed to be reset... it's just a little dumbproof thing that honda incorporated into the car. so right now your car is thinking that you haven't taken it in for it's normal maintenance run.....
i dunno about the civics, but i know on the s2k's we put the key onto the on position then push the maint button and hold it down for like 5 seconds then let go and start the car and it should take care of it....

ohh i just read hillbilly's post hahaha. he tells you how to do it there....
and taking your car in for oil isn't necessary as long as you know you're not over do.. most people that do their own oil changes and own maintenance forget to reset it....this light is usually tripped every 7000 - 8000 miles...
