Default B18C1 or supercharge my B16?

So I'm moving on with my car....and going a new route. I want more tq. and I want the car to be very simple. I have narrowed it down to either swaping in a GSR swap, or installing a JRSC'r. IF I boost it, it will get Hondata with boost, and will stay at the factory boost settings from JR. I do not want to go too hardcore at the moment, and the tq generated from the "stock" settings is plenty. If I go with the GSR swap, it will see the very basics and nothing more....strictly K&N filter, R exhaust manifold, and exhaust.

I chose either of these mainly due to the cost. For both, cost will be relatively equal.

Please do not add something like, go B20 or get a C5....as I already have it narrowed down to 1 of 2.

Just trying to get some feedback...let me know what you guys think.

eh...that's kinda why I'm getting rid of it or boosting it. It's by far, one of the funnest cars to drive, but it just lacks the umph. I love how it revs....but that's it!

keep the 1.6, just think of the 1.8 as new engine new problems, if youve had the b16 for a while and got it tuned right then why trash it ? boost it and give that 1.6 the torque its lacking... fer da boost

Think of it this way, get a b18, and you gain like 10hp, and 20 trq (not sure but i think im close)
get a charger, and you get 50hp, and 50trq (not sure but i think im close, and even if im off, you can tell the gains are much better)

it is a whole different story if your gonna do major work later on, in which case, I would rather have a b18... but since you seem to want to keep it on a daily driver basis, I would say b16 charged all the way.

sorry waffles but I choose neither. Instead of changing the motor, have you considered changing the tranny? The gs-r tranny sucks ***** IMO. I bet you would be happy with a R tranny and a 4.7 FD.

but I do know that B16A + gs-r tranny = waiting for power.

You are completely right, however I think I would still be a little unhappy with it.

Besides, if I keep the tranny, I will still have nice acceleration with slightly longer gearing for longer pulls in boost.

You are gonna go through the trouble of an engine swap for .2 liters...my bro had an si, my friend had a gs-r. Though the gs-r had more torque it wasn't like night and day or anything. I'd go supercharger, its nice having torque down low.

I plan to boost my GSR one day

i rocked my old SOHC VTEC for almost 2 years and just recently swapped in a JDM B18C (GSR) motor and there really isn't a huge difference in torque... there is a difference in top end power, but i was expecting it to be more noticable in the low end.

i say supercharge the B16.

With your theory it's stupid to go from a D16 to a B16

This longer gear is better for boost thing is misleading. The only reason you'd want taller gearing is if your turbo took so long to spool that you ran out of time between gear changes. If that's the case, ditch the truck turbo and get one that's matched to your engine. In the case of a JRSC, with the "instant boost", you can use a shorter gearbox more effectively. I plan on going JRSC later, and will shorten the gears too in order to get up to redline as fast as possible.

To answer your question - if its just a choice between SC B16 and N/A B18C1, then its SC all the way. If you plan on building the B18C1 or boosting it later, it might be worthwhile swapping to the bigger motor. It won't be a huge difference in the end - just look at the dyno charts for B18C1 and B16 motors with the SC.....

HTH!

sell the swap, buy my GSR swap instead
ok...here's the low down i saw with the JRSC...i worked for a shop here in socal and we dynoed this one EG with a GSR/JRSC motor setup in it. we put in hondata on the setup. result: mean *** torque and whp was over 200. bad news is he was pinging like a ******* sonar on a submarine...the JRSC was getting too hot and we were afraid he might start to burn oil and dry up during a long drive. even with hondata setup and tuning we did our best to get his detonation under control...

turbo. my bud has the stup you wanted, but it doesnt impress me at all. he runs low 14's,.

my other pal has a greddy turbo on hi b16, NO hondata (blue box) ran 13.8 on stock boost street tires, then ran 12.9 w slicks and more boost. blue box as well.

just say no to blowers. on that motor anyway. my 2¢

It always comes down to torque....if you start with more you end up with more. If "only" .2 litres didn't make a difference no one would build b20 vtec or swap h22s into their civics.
