B16A3 or jdm B16a sirII?
where i live it would be difficult to get a b16a3. theres a guy in town who can get me a b16a sirII full swap for a much better price than ive found at hondamotorsonline.com. the only thing is i wonder about reliability of a jdm motor. if anyone here has a jdm b16a could they tell me their problems with it(i.e. smoking, rings, etc.) any info greatly appreciated.

Re: B16A3 or jdm B16a sirII? (blufke)
Only problems I had early on were that the engine would sit too long. It would smoke and the vavles stick and some other BS. No one knows for sure how long an engine has been sitting is a pile of junk outdoors. It has to endure all the wheather and depending on where it cam from.. it could have been pulled from scrappers and sat in a salvage yard for years. Or it could have been pulled recently and exported. Its hard to tell by the exterior..cuz they usually spray it down.

HondaMotorsOnline has been an excellent source of Honda motors to many members here on H-T.
I highly doubt the motor will smoke or run crappy.
My pal got a secind-gen B16A in his 1992 DX and it runs awesome.
152whp with 102ft/lbs. of torque to the WHEELS!
That was with just an exhaust and DC header - not even an intake, cams, gears, etc.
I'd got with the second-gen full swap from hondamotorsonline.com y0!

thats a good price
i would inspect the motor before you buy it tho (make SURE its a 2nd gen)
thats cheaper than anything ive ever seen on a second gen b16.

i went and talked to him again. now he says 2500. kinda sucks. the price flucuates i guess. he has contacts for usdm motors. he says around 2k for full. also, what are the exact differences between a b16a3 and 2nd gen b16a?

B16A3 is the OBD1 USDM Del Sol VTEC motor.
This motor is rated at 160hp and usually dynoes around 140-143whp. It has 10.2:1 cr if I'm not mistaken.
B16A (second-gen) is out of the JDM 1992-1995 Civic SiR and SiRII. SiR and SiRII from 1992-1995 have the same motor, but the SiRII had extra non-motor related features like color-matched moldings, ABS, etc.
This motor is rated at 170hp and usually dynoes around 146-152whp. It has 10.4:1 cr also.

What is weird is that the b16a2 is rated at 160hp, but it puts similar numbers down with the jdm SirII motor.
I think honda underrated it as to not affect GSR sales by much.
