B16 Type R swap question
so my question is if you get a JDM B16 type R engine, is it possible to get the car registered with the B.A.R. so you can smog it? assumeing it complies with the year or newer than your car (so say a 99 engine in a 98 car) and it has all of the smog equipment.

From what i have been told the answer is no, because there is no USDM equivelant to it (even the B16a) so a JDM B18c or B18c-R has a USDM equvilent which is either a B18c1 or B18c5. Now there are people out there that claim to be able to regster one but it has not been proved yet. I opted for a B16b and i live in socal but decided to throw caution to the wind and go for it even though its "not smog legal"

Re: B16 Type R swap question (ek forever guy)
so because the B16 has no USDM source it is illegal, but the usdm and JDM b18c5's are interchageable becasue they were sold both in the US and Japan?

Correct. You can swap over the USDM IM's to the JDM motor, which will allow you to have your EVAP components. There is also the availability of USDM ecu's and EM's and air boxes.
Don't CA emission laws bite the big one? There is a long list of other stuff that is illegal in terms of swaps also. You will be fine if you get the B18c5. You can easily sell the JDM parts for the USDM parts.
