B16 Rattle noise when cold Not LMA's not Dist bearing
Hi there
after a timming belt replacement my car is making an strange noise that comes from distributor side; went to the dealer and
they have inspected and reinstalled timming belt > noise stills there
they have adjusted valve lash > noise stils there
they have inspected LMA's all are ok
they have inspected my old dist and was ok, but, neverthless I've decided to replace it with a new one dist > noise stills there
car just runs fine, but the rattling noise stills there when car is cold or when it accelerates to 2000/2500 rpm
Dealer told me to test the car and check how the noise evolves,
Noise is like something lose inside the engine
Many thanks in advance for all your help

I am sorry sir, but I do not believe your story unless you can show some Honda service document stating they gave up and did not know. Can you ?? What did they charge for the diagnostic fee?

Pinpoint the noise using a cheap engine stethoscope.

Yes, but, partially, at 2500 rpm you can hear the rattle noise, it's weak, but it's there
no problem, i'm the 1st one surprised with this; honda dealer wanted to get a distributor from them to swap it and test (the distributor that I've bring to them even it's new, it's from ebay), so, while they get the distributor they told me that i run the car and let the new timing belt work; so, their definitive answer is not yet "we don't know where that noise is coming from"; but they have checked and adjusted, timing belt tension, checked LMA's; checked valve lash; and my 2 dists are making the same noise.
If you want i can upload a picture of the invoice, with what they charged me for inspecting and tensioning timing belt; (I have asked them to check and inspect timing belt tension, because I've found some threads with a similar case, where all was caused by loose timing belt)
they used it and noise is coming from the distributor side. right next to CYL 4

I would rather you boldly publish the dealership name, location and stupid *** techs who did/said all of this. Are you saying that because your sensitivity to a little motion assembly and lash noise they replaced a perfectly fine firing distributor ? AND blamed it on the tiny ,yet reliable, bearing inside the distributor?

you're gonna think I'm crazy but hear me out. Do you have stock exhaust on the car? Check the heat shield that runs from behind the oil pan that bolts around the exhaust. I had almost exactly the same symptoms you are having, although I don't have a b16. My mechanic buddy and I could have sworn up and down sound was coming from the engine. I removed the heat shield and no more sound. Replaced heat shield with some header tape. Would only hear it when driving around 2-4000 rpm.
I could go up and shake the heat shield and it seemed to be on there tight and wouldn't rattle whatsoever when I tapped it. Sounded just like your video.

Please go to google and enter cleaning LMA Honda.Where the lma's are located you could be as clean as hell, change your oil, brush your teeth etc. Sooner or later dirt AND one sided wear will happen to your lma's .Pain in the ***??--You bet. However not very expensive to do or have done by someone who knows and owns a torque wrench with the cap removers. Please google it because finding video on here is impossible unlike the old days of hondatech

If the car is manual, does the noise change when you press the clutch? It could be from inside the bell housing, e.g. the throwout bearing.
