B16 problems
I have a 1997 Ek4 Civic Si (JDM model) with a b16 stock.
I was having trouble getting the rebuilt motor to start when I first put it in( I bought the car with motor rebuilt but out of car).Yesterday I had fuel and spark but it wasnt running. The dizzy was moving around on the head and I came to find that the intake cam was bent so i replaced the cam and reset the timing for the millionth time.
Then it wopuldnt start..no fire..took off the dizzy again, checked the timing, and put the dizzy back on pointing to the right cylinder.then I had fire, put in the plugs and it started..
My problem now...I stopped it as I didnt have the valve cover on yet and no rad/coolant.I put the v.c,timing cover etc back on and now it wont start.again no fire....
Please someone help!!!what could the problem be now?im thinking bad dizzy???if so what part of it??
Yes Ive tried searching
My other question is how to identify itr and ctr cams as i cant find that thread by searching..

Re: B16 problems (Upper Hand)
personally I'd say start small check ur plugs and replace your wires....I have had a set of wires cause me not to fire on 3 cylinders....only b16 I have ever seen run on one cylinder. if that doesn't do it check distributor and make sure you are getting good spark

I have the spark plugs out and touch them to the frame for ground when trying to start to test them.Ive tried different plugs and wires already. But theres no spark coming out the dizzy.
I Totally rebuilt the dizzy with the internals from a 94 D16 that was running, repinned the plug to work.still nothing...

Re: (Upper Hand)
Do you have a factory manual?
I would start with the plugs and systematically work my way out.
Plugs>wires>dizzy>harness>ecu
Make sure fuel injectors are hooked up correctly and have fuel.
Check for CEL codes.
You Can Do It!

I dont have factory manual..
I have fuel, sometimes it sputters like it wants to start but it doesnt.
Theres no spark coming out of the dizzy before and theres none now i rebuilt it with the guts from another one..
Im not sure what to do from here..
It doesnt run so how can i get a CEL code?
If I dont get anywhere by tomorrow afternoon im towing it to a garage i need my car by the weekend!!

Since the OP is under a time constraint, I'll take a wild guess too.
If (in fact) the motor starts & runs with the valve cover off, but won't start with it on...
I would say the plug wires are bad also!
Justification:
You know those little plastic separators/isolators that keep the plug wires from touching each other - the ones they install at the factory?
I used to *think* they were and used to throw them away when I changed my spark plug wires. They never fit the new wires anyway, 'cause I always get bigger wires than OEM.
Well, one night (on one of my domestic cars) I opened the hood to check something (motor running) and OMG!!! I could see sparks shooting between a couple of the wires. The motor was running fine, but it was arcing from one wire to another.
I *suspect* this is what's happening to you.
With the valve cover off, and the wires dangling, they're probably working okay, but...
When you put the valve cover back on, and squeeze the wires together - the voltage is taking the path-of-least-resistance and firing on empty cylinders, or whatever.
Anyway, just an educated guess...
Happy hunting!

Alrighty then!
Missed that the first time around - homebrew 'dizzy' with used parts...
Go buy yourself a new distributor and call it a day!

Re: (CRex_22)
Have you checked your grounds yet? Check the ground by the thermostat housing. It gets over looked sometimes because it's hidden away. It's an ECU ground for all sorts of different circuits.
