Hey guys, I'm about to take my motor out today.... From the bottom. My friend is letting me borrow a big floor jack to get the car high enough to slide the motor out but I was wondering if you guys had any tips on how to get it out easily. I'm going to be working by myself so that makes it a little more difficult then it has to be...

I was thinking about ways that I would be able to pull the motor out but I kind of hit a brick wall... I dont have any type of board with wheels that I can set it on to slide out..

I was thinking of doing it like this: Set 2 phone boocks underneath the motor, lower the the car until the motor is sitting on the phone books and unbolt the mounts/ lift the car back up... The next problem would be pulling it out from under there so i can push the other one in there..

A couple other notes... I want to do this without taking the entire hub/assembly so thats whhy im going to put it on phone books, so I dont have to drop the car to the floor and risk messing up the suspension.

arite,t hansk guys any ideas would be helpful. Btw this is a D16Y8 im pulling out of a 92 hatch

alls i can say is good luck. because i dont think with a floor jack you will get the front end high enough to get the engine out from underneath it. you have no access to a cherry picker? the way i used to do them on my back before i got a lift, i owuld take the tranny out the bottom, then cherry pick the engine out the top. i think you are gonna run into a few snags with getting the car high enough, but thats my oppinion.

It's pretty hard dropping it from the bottom when the car is on the ground. There was a user on here that could have been killed because he had his entire car resting on like 15 pieces of plywood on each side and NOTHING was secure. You'll DEFINITELY need to have something lift the front end up high enough or get someone with a cherry picker.

the floor jack isn't one of the tiny ones, it's a big *** one that you crank while standing

I would try using a messed up skateboard with a board on top and pulling it out or something with wheels. Good luck

good suggestion. I do have a skateboard layin around. but it'll probably tip over.

I've seen pleny of people do it.

Usually they take the suspenion off, leave the car on the ground un-bolt the engine mounts and with the help of some friends, pick the front of the car up

It may also be easier to drop the engine onto a roller and when the chassis is picked up, have the weakest slide it out from under the car.

i'm the poorest honda guy ever.... i had to use a vacuum cleaner as a breaker bar and had to put a big boulder on a skateboard and push it to ram a pickle fork because i had no good hammer. =P

i took my gsr motor out of my freinds car from the bottom.i dropped the car all the way to the ground and undid all the mounts and left the motor on a metal tray (cause to me it's easier to pull out IMOP)Then i jacked the car up to the full extent of the jack height. placed the jackstands underneath and then i took a 6inch wooden block and jacked up each side one at a time to the highest of the jack stands.once i was able to clear the radiator support i just pulled it out with not problems, just gotta work the motor around the front end(also dont forget to wheel chock the rear wheel and take the front bumper off.. ) just my 2 cents took me about 30 to prep the engine pay yanked the motor in about in about 45 min. by myself while my freind was at work

i did the transmission on the floor dude are u sure u can get the car that high lol. ive heard of peopel doing motors from the bottom but on a lift ive also heard the correct way to do it is from the bottom wiht our cars but with a floor jack... why not rent a cherry picker or buy it and return it. i dunno ur call.

or you can use a creeper to roll the motor from underneath the car..its nice a low.also durable..

First check & see just how high you can get your car. I know for fact that if I lift mine over 24", the tailpipe will get smashed (94 hatch lowered 2.5"). You may want to try removing the rear bumper cover first, and then your muffler.

I really have no idea how high you need to lift your car, but my jack lifts up to 29" and it still didn't look like enough. Here are some pics of it at +24"...

you don't have a bobcat do you i used that to lift the engine/tranny out of my friends gto.

you could also take the head off and accessories out and take it out by hand if you have a few people

I dont have any advice for you, I've never removed an engine, but good luck and dont get hurt.

BTW, I remember you saying that thing about rolling a rock at your car on a skateboard. LOL, classic.

Hmm. I don't want to spend any money so my friend is letting me borrow his floor jack. It's a big *** one similar to that blue one. I dont know if 24 inches woudl be enough but my friend recommended putting a wood underneath the jack to get it high enough.

I never thought about crushing the tail pipe or the rear bumper but i'll do that.... My car is dumped.

i don't think a floor jack is gonna cut it you will do more harm than good doing it that way

All you have to do is jack up each side of the car individually and set jack stands there, almost to full extension though. That will get you more than high enough. You problem is gonna be getting the engine and trans out without something to roll it on. That is gonna be a bitch. Just buy a cheap craftsman creeper, you won't regret it. I used a creeper to put my engine in and it worked perfectly. i couldn't have been happier.

If you cant make due with 24", then your obviously not maneuvering it correctly!

if you have a floor jack like pictured ^^^ and you take the bumper off, there should be more than enough room. You probably get 4-6 inches extra by taking off the front bumper

a way to do it is to use a skateboard. i had a wide board on my skateboard and lowered my car onto it. then i undid the maounts and raised the car up. i was by myself. if you are worried, throw a rope arond the whole thing while you roll it. it is ghetto but it works if you have to.

with the wheels off and wheel bearing out of the way, it would slide out the drivers side without a problem. THat seems high enough, but it might be an optical illusion.

if his friend has that kind of jack. the base would get in the way of the droping he would have jack it up in a diffenect angle

Would the inches you would gain by removing the cylinder head help any? Or not worth it really?
