anything to get off primer overspray?
not too sure this is the correct forum, but i'll ask since there's a lot of traffic that flows thru this forum. before i bought my car, it got repainted. the former owner had some primer over spray that went into the engine bay. i guess it would be ok if the whole engine bay was black, but it's not. so i was wondering if there's anything i can use to get it off or would i have to repaint the entire engine bay? TIA

you can try rubbing compound or wet sand then rubbing compound then glaze followed by wax.but then you are going to have nice shinny where you cleaned off the over spray

a friend of mine had this prob. with his GTI and we just used some "Oops" (which is kinda like goo gone) and an old rag and it all came off with some scrubbing 
. .

I picked up some stock eg taillights that had paint overspray, just took some liquid polish, water and a razor blade to get it off.
Not sure if this would apply to the engine bay though.

honestly since its the engine bay, you wont have the adequate space to use a claybar which would work great though i would leave it as is for now, if you are gonna use a solvent or something that is flammable make sure your engine is cold, and that you flush with plenty of water...if i were you and you were planning at some time to pull the engine, taking care of it then would be the easiest and consume the least amount of time

don't use any harsh paint remover.
Claybar FTMFW.
It's what all the pro's use to get overspray off.
Harsh cleaners/paint removers will remove your clearcoat and paint also.

stop making suggestions if you do not know what you are talking about do not use aircraft stripper it will strip everything and then you will have to just prime the spot you just stripped to remover primer the best thing to use is just some laquor thinner either nason 481-16 or dupont 3812 either one

i'll probably try the clay bar first. i have some brake cleaner, but i dont know...i don't see it working. lol especially since the overspray has been on for some time.

DO NOT USE AIRCRAFT STRIPPER. USE LAQ. THINNER IT SHOULD TAKE IT OFF NO PROB AND MON'T DAMAGE THE EXISTING PAINT

Here is how the detailers at my work get overspray off. They 1st use laquer Thinner and scrub the heck out of it. They get my lil bit of primer oversray off from time to time. Hey it happens sometimes in production shops. If thinner isnt working I suggest wetsanding with 2000grit...if that doesnt work go down to 1000grit. That should get it off. Use rubbinging compound over the wetsanded area. Then use polishing compound and you should be good to go by now.

I agree use a little laquer thinner on a rag and wipe it a few times. Then wash it real good with a car wash soap to get he residue off.
If that doesn't work your primer has actually bit into the stock paint and will have to be resprayed.
You could try wetsanding and a light buffinf, but as mentioned it would leave a bright shinny spot if you didn't sand through the base coat 1st.
