Anyone here ever try to get 50mpg+ in a Civic?
With gas prices the way they are and the fact that I commute 64 miles a day, I have shifted the focus of my dd Civic to trying to get the best possible gas mileage I can. My last two fill-up's I got 47.5 and 46.5mpg respectively. My goal is to reach 50mpg without any drastic changes. Mainly all I've done to achieve this is slow down on the interstate (60mph), not drive like I stole it from lights and stops, and let off the gas on downhills in 5th gear. My car is a '96 hatch with a stock y7 in it with 170k miles. My last tank was a personal best for miles travelled as I went 493 miles on 10.6 gallons. So are there any other mpg junkies in here these days? Oh I also removed the back seats and passenger seat to save a little weight. I'm the only one who rides in this car and it is my commuter only.

I'm pretty sure there are quite a few guys who routinely hit 50 MPG. I'm trying myself, haven't gotten that far yet.

i heard that you can put acetone into your gas tank. i read about a month ago that for every 10 gallons you put 1-3 oz of acetone. the reports said that it raises mpg by 13-28%, or somewhere around those ranges. i haven't tried it yet cause i have to find 100% acetone. my question is does the 1-3 oz of acetone can produce the 13-28% or so milage? i heard you can use nail polish and stuff. try googling acetone for mpg. there's a lot of articles about it.

I have been experimenting with my technique some over the past few weeks. So far the best I have done is 44.5 mpg in town. I have a 98 civic ex 4 door with automatic.

I am going to have to look into that but it just sounds like a really bad idea to add acetone. Oh by the way check out a true value hardware they tend to carry pure acetone or even a paint supply store will have it

not sure about the acetone - you can make better gains without it and by just changing the way you drive.

I read about the acetone too, but also read that it could mess up the fuel lines and some other stuff. Not too sure if it would at that low concentration. Also seems unbelievable that it would raise mpg by that much, but I dunno.

from what my brother told me that there are people thats been using it for years now hadn't had any problems (he read it on homemadeturbo.com). i also read the same thing in one of the articles in google. the guy basicly had an extreme mixture of acetone and gasoline on the some fuel system parts and left it for months and months, and reported no physical damage. i don't know how crieduble it is, but from what i read from all the atricles. acetone didn't seem to damage anything, also doesn't fuel injector cleaner have acetone in it?

Yeah I was thinking that fuel injector cleaner might have it in there but not sure. It is something worth checking into if you can get the increases that some people claim.

my 94 civic vx, when in stock trim, got to about 48.5 mpg a couple of times. It was a lot of highway driving so that had a lot to do with it.

damn i wish i be getting that much milage. my 93 si (d16) is getting 30ish, but the motor kinda tired and leaking a little bit of oil. i think its telling me that i need to do a swap soon or do some regular maintaince to get better gas milage. whats the ingredients of seafoam?

Yeah I knew the VX's were rated to get about 51mpg on the highway. I want to be able to do the same thing in my DX. Are the DX and VX trannies the same?

the VX's has the longest gears out of all the d series engine. so if you want you can swap that into your dx if you want to try to achieve that mpg.

My VX typically got 40-45 mixed driving(with my heavy foot) one time I saw 62.5 MPG.
DIY CAI, cool evening air, light on the gas pedal and hold it at 55mph.
(VX and CX have the same trans)

Here you go.

#8 guy is a CX civic getting 71.41mpg - there's a bunch of VX's (economical VTEC) getting approximately that too.

Keep up with routine maintenence. I've seen alot of people gain some MPG's just form replacing old spark plugs and dizzies.

Re: (Bejita)
Already explored that site and they are getting some amazing mileage for sure!! Oh and about the Prius, hell naw! My car's already paid for, so why would I want to buy a brand new car and have a payment to get a few more mpg? I'm just trying to see what I can stretch out of this old Civic.
