another engine swap and car won't start question please help, searched
hey, I put a d16y8 block with a d16z6 head on it into my 93 del sol. The car has spark in every wire and fuel is getting to the fuel rail. The car is turning over but just not cranking over. I know this has been covered before but I did not find a solution to my problem so please let me know what you think. I have my tools in hand and ready to try anything. Please let me know what I should try or check. Thanks- Josh

Probably got your spark plug wires on the wrong spot on the dizzy.

Thanks sauceja, I just checked all the plug wires and rotor and everything is in place. when the engine is in top dead center the rotor is facing the number one spark plug wire on the dizzy. still turning over just not cranking over and it has fuel and spark in all wires. Does anyone else have anyother suggestions? please help this is my Daily driver and I need to get it moving agian. Thanks-Josh

now as for the grounds, there's only a couple right? on the head, the transmission and the therma housing? are there any others? Thanks once again,

make sure that when the engine is at TDC that the cam pulley is pointing up. but it can also be 180 degrees off if im not mistaken

hey thanks for the link, the timing belt skipping teeth may be the cause, but I'll have to check. My question now is, how do you know if the timing belt skipped teeth? could you give me a run through of how you checked to see if the belt skipped teeth? thanks once again.

turn the crank pulley CCW until the TDC marks are aligned, another way is to check cylinder 1 to see if it is at its at its peek
(pull the spark plug out of cylinder 1, put something long and thin enough to touch the top of the cylinder; as you are turning the crank pulley you should see it rise or lower. when it reaches it's peak that should be at TDC)
when the crank is at TDC the cam should pointing up and there should be marks on your cams that should line up with marks on the head.
if it is not then your cam timing is off.

alright here is where we are now: Blk2mid2sol, you were right, I did what you told me and the timing belt was not in all the teeth on the cam. and the cam was way off. so here's where I am now, I need to know what has to be done to fix this and prevent it from happening again. I'm pretty sure something with the tensioner has to be done. please let me know I am starting to make progress now. Thanks once again.and let me know

it skipped? id be really concerned that you mashed the valves...
Anyway, sounds like you didnt adjust the tensioner the right way at all.
From when you installed the belt, list the steps you took to adjust it

well, I know this probably isn't the right way but I just put the tensioner on the tightest I could get it up against the belt. could you tell me how the do it the right way and how I can check to see if my valves are messed up? Thanks a lot and let me know.

Which timing belt did you use? Seeing as how it is a Frankenstein swap the wrong timing belt may have caused it to jump teeth and each time you cranked it you pushed further and further from the proper alignment.

well I used the Y8 timing belt because it was new. I went to autozone and they only carry one belt for a 93 honda del sol 1.6. So I assumed I had the right belt. Is there any way to adjust the tensioner without removing the engine?

I am pretty sure that you are using the wrong timng belt. PLease don't take this at face value because it has been a while since I have done this on a single cam, but I think that you are to use the belt that goes with the head, in this case you would use the z6 timing belt. You need to check the valves before you move forward though and using the wrong length belt will cause them to come in contact with the pistons and replacing the belt and firing the engine like that could ruin what may be a salvageable engine. Or if you are feeling lucky then go for it ! I have done that with suceess but it would be ill advised.

the best way to check you valves is to take the head off and look at them. It'll be pretty obvious if you fucked one up. Your best bet would be to look for the one (or more ) that looks different than the others. If thats the case you'll have to replace them and possibly many more expensive parts. How many times and for how long did you crank
it over? Did it start to sound progressively worse?

alright, here's where we are now, I'm pretty sure that the tensioner was not tight enough on the timing belt but regardless, all the valves are fine(thanks importdreamer for that advice) and the crank shaft is at TDC. The cam shaft is also lined up right. the only problem now is that the belt is loose. So, my question is, is there any way to adjust or tighten that tensioner without removing the engine? please let me know, I think I'm almost done with this problem and moving agian.
