Another Crower cam story!!!!!!
Sorry the pic is so big, first time posting a pic and i don't know how to down size. Any help would be appreciated.
Anyway, good ole' stupid crowers. I was at the local 1/8th mile track yesterday, made one pass and did ok. Second pass got almost to the end of the track, didn't miss any gears and only revved to 8500, car stumbled and then cut off. I ran my car with the same setup plenty of times this was just a bad day i guess. Another trip home in the roll-back. The motor is a b18c1 in an EH hatch, the valve train is or was crower 402a's, dual springs, and titanium retainers, and skunk gears. No bottom end work. Not sure how bad the rest of the damage is but i don't think it's too bad, i hope. What else usually happens when a cam breaks.. what else goes bad? I know there are plenty of you out there that have had your own experience with crower cams. Sucks doesn't it!!!!!!!!!!

Stop buying Crower DOHC VTEC.
The DOHC nons and the SOHCs don't have this problem.

make sure you get the head and oil passages cleaned thoroughly. Lots of metal bits and flakes like to hide in there. Which may lead to oil starvation in your new motor.

has anyone heard anything about the crane cams?? I wanted to get the crower but everytime I hear anything about them it is because they have broken. Even my brother in laws crower 402's for the ls broke on him. Oh yeah and I would take the head off and try to see if any damage was done, or if you can do a compression check.

Re: Another Crower cam story!!!!!! (superls92)
I was gonna do a compression test and take the head off. Hopefully the damage isn't severe. The timing didn't slip, the timing belt didn't get slack. Everything stayed tight, no broken rocker arms. The real story will be told when the head is removed. Luckily i already had some ARP head studs and bolts in my building WAS planning on higher compression JDM P30's but haven't bought pistons yet. Its probably gona be a while before that happens...

Cams break (most of the time) because the LMAs (lost motion assemblies) fail. When they can't take the abuse of say newer Type R LMAs, the collapse and cause the cam to seize, thus making it go no where but *snap*
When you get some "high profile" cams for your head, be sure to also upgrade the LMAs to some new Type R ones. A lot of the cams that I've seen break like that were in older B16 heads using 10+ year old LMAs.

I ran crowers and have had no problems, and many of these cases of crowers breaking all stem back to the same cams that somebody "heard" about breaking, or had a friend that broke some or something like that. I am sure if you contact crower and were running all crower components then the will take care of your problem, even if it was an installation error. I and several other locals have ran and still run crower with zero failure. and If I am not mistaken, I have read there are some other companies that use crower cores for their own custom grind cams.
Have you contacted crower yet, and what did they say?

I can't wait until everyone who's had crower cam problems switch over to another company and then we start hearing about all the problems with the next company and people then saying "dont buy brand-X anymore!!"

8500? that's all? ok, I know a lot of people are gonna flame for this but just because you HAVE a redline that high doesn't mean you should constantly abuse the valvetrain AT that redline often. Sooner or later something IS going to break one way or another.
Indy teams pay $100k for engines that rev to 10k+ and they still break them all day long but they dont complain because they knew that they were stressing the components regardless of what they're "capable" of.
Just because you CAN rev to 8500 all day long doesn't mean you necessarily SHOULD hit redline on every shift.

Re: (stackz)
Easy on the flames. I don't shift at 8500 all the time. When i drive on the street i hardly ever go above 4 or 5k. And usually at the track i don't go over 8k, probably should have mentioned that. By the way, after i pulled the head i had 4 bent valves. Now its just sitting in the car port and i'm waiting on fedex for all the new stuff.
