Alternator power wire problems

Alternator power wire problems
My 92 dx hatch started acting weird the other day. I would be driving and the whole cluster would shut off. Well finally I looked on my turbo timer and found that I was only running at 8.6 volts while driving. First things first checked all grounds, tsat, tranny, and valve cover. All good. Battery on it has been perfectly fine. Next thing was get alternator off and tested. Glanced down and saw the power wire on the alt all burnt up. It appears the casing was rubbing on something and went all the way through and started arcing I'm assuming. This was all within the first 3 inches behind the connector on the alt post. As a temporary fix (until I could pull the whole engine harness) I got some 4gauge wire, disconnected the factory wire from the under hood fuse box and ran it from the fuse box to the post on the alternator. Turn the key to accessory and nothing. Nothing turns on at all. 80amp fuse associated with that wire appears to be good. Def doesn't look bad to the eye. Before I put this wire on car would start up and all just ran low voltage and would idle way down and the cluster wouldn't work 85% of the time. Haven't drove it since it died on me. Then this happened today. As far as I know that's all that wire did is run from the fuse box to the post on the alternator. Any suggestions on what's going on would be appreciated!!! Thanks!

Re: Alternator power wire problems
Solved my own problem. Held the 80 amp fuse associated with the alternator twice now to the light in my garage and appeared to be good. Looked at it with my flashlight and noticed a hairline crack. Always triple check ur fuses apparently! Lol
