if you wanna mess with the stock airbox I would just remove the resonator and rout some duct just like the Comptech Icebox setup. and drop in a K&N filter ,
or just get a Comptech Icebox , they aren't cheap but usually you get what you pay for.
I want one with a K&N cone filter.

these links may give ya some ideas
1st one is DIY resonator removal

if you really want, get some kind of 3/4 inch drill bit and swiss cheese the airbox. My buddy did it on his integra just for ***** and giggles, and it actually sounded just like an intake, if thats what your going for. If you do this, just make sure to drill the holes on the side of the box, before the filter so you dont suck something up.

Better than with the stock air filter. I'm usinga K&N drop-in.

I did the exact same thing on my CRX. Upgraded to a stock K&N replacement filter.
