I want to make my car fast but I don't want to spend a **** load of money on an exhaust system.. If I buy a muffler, is it going to give me any horespower whatsoever? if so, how much?

i would say it's not going to give you anything too noticable... especially if you don't want to spend that much money.

...no, when I was more heavily into modding I got my cat-back for about 800 (tanabe super racing medalion) I prolly got raped on it. I'm actually on the market for a new exhaust, my stock one is broken and rattling... so if someone can asnwer this that would be great.
I did some shopping on my own but didn't find anything worth purchasing for under 400

First off, at the most just the muffler isn't going to do much of anything. Neither is an exhaust really, maybe 5-10hp, which on our cars is actually alot percentage wise, but not really in the grand scheme. Secondly, EBAY is your friend. I have an OBX header/exhaust that is actually VERY nice, sounds great and I think just as good as any name-brand stuff. Its fully stainless and robot-tig welded so it is good quality. Best part, $250 for the catback to my door and 150 for the header, plus $60 for the catpipe, which you will need. Plus it comes with a plug for the canister which is nice on long trips. my .02

Re: (JET-BLAK 95 DX)
buy a muffler go to your local exhaust shop and have them fab up and exhaust for you , don't forget the resonator ...
you should be able to get out the door for around 200 total.

a muffler on a stock car will give u 1-3 hp if your going to buy the muffler just do it right from the get go and buy a complete exhaust system. dont worry about the expensive exhaust systems out there. just make sure it is stainless steel and straight as possible for lower backpressure. if you are runnig stock or with a couple of upgrades just go with a 2.5 inch piping anything bigger will result in a power loss at the bottom end lastly the reason why some exhoust systems are so expensive is becasue they are titanium unless you want to save some weight then u might have to pay an extra 400+ dollars. other than that its the same thing

Pick two, only two
1) Fast
2) inexpensive
3) reliable
Save up your money, make your car appeal to you in looks, then piece together a homemade turbo. A turbo is the only bolt on you'll notice for under $1000. I hate to bust your bubble, but a high quality Intake, intake mani, header, and catback all together might give you 20hp. And that's going to cost $1,500 at a minimum. $800 for a Saab turbo homemade and you can puch 15psi safely.

I've personally had bad experiences with OBX, and other less reputable companies. Going turbo doesn't honestly sound to be within your budget, or what youre looking for at the moment. I'd say your best bet at the moment is to start with a reputable company's cat-back. Use scrutiny, but as the others said, Ebay is your friend here. Skunk2, DC, etc. Good luck.

A saab turbo would be out of steam at 15 psi and the statement is very false you made.
a turbo build is useless without proper management and tuning. 3 psi and the wrong timing curve could introduce your rod to the block.
you can by the cheapest of cheap ebay **** or the most expensive name brand parts and with out a good tune it will put in a the same situation, looking for another motor.
