i have a 92 hb Si. and i plan to swap out my D16z6 soon. wat DOHC is affordable, easy to mod, and will pass emission standards? which one will actually hold up in the long run as well as daily driving? i've heard alota mixed views about all the B series motor. so wat motor would you choose? and why?

What do you consider affordable?

You can pretty much go....

ZC (crap, good for 88-91 Civic/CRX) Not street legal
B16a (a little better than crap, Better for 88-91 Civic/CRX) only B16a3 and B16a2 are street legal
B16b (over priced but 185 hp out of a 1.6 ) Not street legal
b18b (good for daily driving, turbo and NOS) Street Legal
b18c (good for daily driving, a little more than B18b) B18c1 Street Legal

B18c5 (Very expencieve!!! But good for a weekend, or around town driver. I would not suggest using it if you do alot of freeway driving cause of the gear ratio)
H22a (Cheap, and fast, but people have said they have issues with handling)

Just my $0.o2

I saw a LS for sale for like 1300 for a 98.. now maybe the guy was on crack... but if u just look thru thepartstrader.com... recycler.com.. you find swaps at a good price.. but be wary of scammers and low lives

Because the ZC was never sold her..therefore it is not legal becuz there was never a US counterpart to it.. thought it is simliar to the 1st gen integra motor.. it does not have a US counterpart here..hence illegal

get a 94-95 LS 5 speed motor swap and you will have a strong performer plus many routes to choose for tuning/power options....

ls/vtec
turbo
n/a hybrid setup.. b16 tranny, etc.

ok, this might be a really stupid question, but here goes. If my intent is to get a motor to build/rebuild as a winter project, is there a drawback to going with a 1st Gen B16A? Again, I'm just talking about the motor itself. I'll source hydro box and appropriate ECU to use with it.

In a nutshell, are there any glaring differences between 1st and 2nd Gen B16A's internally?

oil and flow. second gen has better flowing properties and better oiling capabilites. (im 99% sure but not 100%) the first gen will cost almost as much with all the motor mounts and wiring and such (at least thats what i have heard) the b16a2 is a complete bolt in/drop in i mean the del sol had it for christ sakes. here is a link for more info http://tech.hybridgarage.com/tech/b16/index.html

2ktyperhatch, i agree with most of your post... but I don't know if the b16a warrants a "slightly better than crap" rating...
Ok I shouldnt say "Slightly better than crap" It is a good engine 160 H/P out of a 1.6 is good in any standards...
I had a b16 in a 92 Si, good for a 15 sec 1/4 (stock) 14.7 w/I/H/E/Vtec Controller. IMO b16 is fun, but i'm not doing it again.

I agree, if I had a 4th gen civic/crx, or a 5th gen cx or vx I would go with a b16a. But I have a 94 si and am going with a b18c,( because of the weight of the si). I like the b16 though, it just needs torque.

What do you want to use the car for and how much are you going to mod the thing after the swap (as in actually mod it)? The B16A is a good choice for cheap racing since it responds very well to modding, but for a daily driver the LS would be a better choice, especially with a B16A tranny. The GSR motor is the best, but if you want cheap then thats not realistic. Don't believe the hype about B16A. The motor works alright in my gutted CX, but the Si is fairly heavy. If you want proof that the B16A sucks in a heavy car, hop into a stock 99-00 Si and take it for a spin.
