99 si bad gas mileage
Hi,
I recently bought a 99 si because I was told by numerous people that they get really good gas mileage, if you drive conservatively, but they are also good when driving aggressively. I was told that I should be getting high 20's if I drive conservatively, rarely kicking into vtec. However every time I fill up (a full tank) I only get around 230 miles before I have to fill up again. My SI is stock under the hood and as far as I know, it's never been retuned (hondata). The previous owner did put on 17" tires which I know would lower my mpg by a little, but I don't think it would lower it that much. Right now I'm only getting around 20 mpg, if that (driving normal). I've changed my oil and my spark plugs recently, both of which didn't help. I've also changed my distributor cables.

Re: 99 si bad gas mileage (YellowCowboy)
It's a pretty vague question.
The one thing that comes to my mind is the fact that you have a Hondata system that you have not gotten tuned? I dont get it. How do you know the tuning hasn't been changed?
The other issue is that I'm not sure from your post that you've actually measured your gas mileage. The next time you fill up, fill it up all the way and put your trip meter to 0. Then drive as you normally would. Go back to the same gas station, at the same pump and fill up again. Divide the number of miles on your trip meter by the number of gallons you just filled up. There's your MPG.
Driving habits may be to blame also. Do you idle a lot? Sit in traffic a lot? You may keep the revs low..but do you use a lot of throttle to accelerate?

Re: 99 si bad gas mileage (B serious)
Like I said, I just bought the car so I dont know for sure if the car has been retuned. The guy I bought it from told me that everything was stock and he changed nothing but the cosmetics. Everything under the hood is stock at least. And to be more precise, I had 234 miles at 11.8 gallons at the station. I was almost completely out of gas. But yes I will try to lost the 17 inch tires first to see how much it improves.

Re: (sde780)
Im sorry I said it incorrectly, I meant to say that I haven't ever messed with hondata unless the previous owner before me did. All I have is his word that its stock, at first appearance it looks it, and it runs fine so I never bothered to really check. I've only owned this car a very short time. Oh and to answer the other question before, I don't usually idle too long and I dont use a lot of throttle to accelerate. There isnt too much traffic in my area but I think the driving conditions of the area would be considered on the badder side.

Re: (YellowCowboy)
I'm still confused about the Hondata comments.
What does the Hondata have to do with anything if the car is stock? Does the car have a Hondata system or not?
