99 Ek Civic with JDM B16A3 Wiring Help Please
I recently purchased a JDM B16a3, got the whole package.
-ecu
-axles
-etc
Only things i did not get were engine mounts thats stops the tranny from swaying into the axles and long enough radiator hoses and also intructions on wiring, heh.
So, it runs. With a few problems. Fuel Pump, tac, speed-o and radiator coolent fan doesnt run. And we just figured out that the old D16 was an OBD2 had a twist. The D16 wiring harness is lacking 4 extra wires, which we are guessing is the 4 things that dont work. Makes sense in my eyes i guess. Tell me if im wrong cause im kinda lacking in the car department.
And just just to make it clear. We wanted to make sure it runs so we just hooked the fuel pump up to a battery, which worked.
So what im getting to is, the new b16 wiring harness had 4 wires that the the old d16 harness doesnt have. Could i get a jumper/conversion harness?
Or do i need to rip apart the dash and rewire. Please say option 1, cause 99 civic dashes require 1 million screws to get to where the wire goes through the firewall.
Or is the B16a3 even an OBD2? Cause the d16 is a obd2b. The b16 comes from a Delsol, which is the same year era as the OBD2, so could the b16 be a obd2b, with 4 more wires added? Or could it be a obd2a? I dunno im confused. Please help.

Used the b16 ecu. And we actaully cut the old wiring harness where they cut the b16 harness and sadered them together. But that didnt work lol.

The b16a3 is out of the del sol. Which means its OBD1
Your car is OBD2A.
I would suggest picking up a 99-00 Civic Si or EX wiring harness and getting a jumper harness to get it to hook up to the ECU.
(unless I missed something, the engine has been converted, or its not actually a b16a3)

B16a3 came from a 95+ DelSol. Which would make it an obd2 right?
And someone told me my car was an OBD2b not a... ugh
and my car is a 99 civic ex coupe yes. with the d16y8. i still have the full wiring harness., its just cut in half. could resader it instead of buying a new one.
So here is a break down of what im working with.
I have a 99 civic ex with a d16y8 and from what you said an obd2a harness. I got a b16a3 which what you said is a obd1. So what do i do? I have the entire harness for the d16y8. And i have the harness for the b16a3 all the way up to the before the fuze box. So i have the d16 and the b16 fuze box. And where they cut the wiring harness for the b16 we cut it at that same spot on the d16 harness and sadered them together.
Hope that makes sense haha

Your right. That was my mistake.
You have OBD2B
I thought the b16a3's were all OBD1. Could be wrong. Either way, the ECU plugs are different I thought. How did you plug the ECU clips in? Something doesn't seem right.

All the ecu clips plug in fine.
Everything fits perfect.
Just that the wires by the kick panel, there is a green female plug, and thats the old harness. And the male plug-in from the newharness that plugs into the female, has an extra 4 wires that the old harness doesnt have.

So what im saying is that the female is lacking 4 wires that the male has.
-female (old d16y8 harness, Lacking 4 wires)
-male (new b16a3 harness, 4 wires)

Wow,ok i had the same problem with my b16b swap into my 99 hatch. I had to use a 99-00 si harness..the dizzy plugs where wrong, my fuel pump didnt prime or turn on, and alot of my electrical stuff didnt wrk.
But once i put the 99-00 si harness in. It fired right up. I just finish this swap no more then 5 days ago. And i haven had any problems since. I didnt use any jumper hanress or anything.
I just plugged in the 99-00 si harness to the jdm b16b motor, hooked/plugged in the ecu and wala...fired up

Yeah, if the ECU is also OBD2b which by the sounds of it, it might be. But the original ECU would not be.
His dilemma is that the motor is OBD2a whereas his car and harness is OBD2B. They are different.
But I still say the same thing, your best bet might just be to start fresh and get an Si harness and go from there.

Well the ecu is b16a3, and the new harness came attached to the motor so its the right harness i would think. Cause the harness plugged into the motor all plugs into the ecu.
But why would i need an si harness? Cause i got a del sol engine. sorry just a little confused

I thought the harness was cut. Is it still a full harness? what was the point of using half of your original harness?
If the motor and ECU are both OBD2A you can pick up a 96-98 Civic EX harness. That will plug right into the ECU and everything on the motor.
That is, if you are SURE its an OBD2 swap. If its OBD1 then you will need a jumper harness.

Haha it is cut, i still have the other half though.
I cut it due to me being lazy, cause when i first cut it. Bother harnesses looked the same. But the difference between them are 4 wires.

the easiest way to do this is forget about splicing wires.
buy a complete engine wiring harness from 99-00 civic SI
get b16 distributor, or a distributor 0bd1 to obd2 adapter.
get a obd1 to obd2b ecu harness
get a obd1 p30, or chipped p28 ecu.
simplest fix for your problems.

Haha cool, thanks EK.
Cant wait to be up and running.
I actually figured this out a second ago haha. No lie, when i figures this out i actually burnt my cheek with my cigarette. I was so focused on figuring this out. The civic has been parked for 2 weeks now. She needs to be free.

your motor is obd1 witch means u have no crank sensor i think u used the obd1 harness and an obd2 car harness that u cut and put back together i would say u get a crank sensor its by the pulley and get a new si or ex obd2b harness and a obd2b computer and it should start up but if u dont have an obd2 dizzy and injectors on that that motor it will never turn on hope this helps if not pm me and send me ur number and ill call u and hell you out thanks

Well I went to a technician shop like 15 min ago.
Folks friends owns it.
I have the dizzy for the motor and everything, its a complete swap.
And B16a3 is from a newer del sol. I think a 97. So This B16 is OBD2a.
So what he said i need is an OBD2b to OBD2a jumper/conersion harness.

NO that will not work. You have a motor that is 97 spec. Your car is 99 spec. Which means you have an obd2b car. If you get a 99-00 si engine bay harness. You can keep your stock dizzy that came with your swap. Plug in all the sensors/plugs. You will also be able to use your same ECU. It will fire right up.
I had the same problem about 5 days ago. I had gotten a complete swap b16b. Which was a 98-spec. I have a 99 honda hatchback civic. I tried using the wire harness that originally came with the swap. I thought it was plug and play. But it didnt fire up. Well I went out and looked for 99-00 si harness. I removed the harness that came with my swap and used the 99-00 si harness. Plugged in the ECU and started her up..
