98 HX, sputtering.... what are my distributor options with VTEC-E? Will nonvtec dizzy work?
Ok for some reason my 98 HX is sputtering under acceleration like it isnt getting spark. Its very similar to what it feels like when the ignitor is going, but i dont think it is the ignitor becuase im not getting any tach jumping or anything. The sputtering happens randomly, less when the car is cold, more when its up to operating temps.
I have replaced the plugs and wires, no improvement. My next step is cap and rotor, then coil and ignitor. My question is this:
I have a spare dseries non-tec dizzy lying around... can i direct swap it onto the hx or will it not work cause of vtec-e?
If i cant direct swap it, can i at least use the rotor, coil and ignitor from it? Or if i cant use all 3, which parts, if any, can i use?
Thanks for any help, just want the car to run smooth again!!

yes, i have checked the timing. its dead on.
there are no codes.
pulling the spark plug wires off doesnt do anything- its something in the distributor.
Dude im not a n00b- you think ive been on here since '03 and i dont know to check the basics? cmon guy...
started happening after i chacnged my header and spark plug wires... i think i may have damaged the cap removing the wires, one of the wires broke off in the cap and i had to fiddle with it to get it out
can somone answer my distributor questions? I know for sure the issue is one of these, not sure which:
cap
rotor
coil
ignitor
im thinking maybe the cap or the coil? i dont see why the rotor would give out all the sudden

I believe, but I am not 100% - that there really is no difference between a vtec and non vtec dizzy, except for the clip on the outside to hold the vtec wire connector in place.
Is your HX an automatic tranny (CVT)?

thanks jibs that helps
nah the hx is manual, but it is obd2 and my spare sohc dizz is obd1... but i think if i hack up the harness i can make it work.... but im just gonna swap the guts [coil, ignitor, rotor] and add a new cap and hopefullly that fixes it

correct.
for further clarification, all 96-00 D-series distributors share the same bolt pattern as the 88-95 non-vtec dizzys.
y7 dizzy works on a y5 head, etc.
y8/y5/h7 head in crx = use crx dizzy
y8/y7/y7 head in eg use d15b8/d15b7 dizzy
