I have a 98 4 door ex, manual transmission. Anyhow, my tranny is toast. My mechanic sourced out a 98 DX tranny that looks pretty damn clean. I'm considering putting it in since this car is my daily driver and I'm not going to race this car at all. I have a turbo integra to satisfy my speed thrill.

My question is, if I put the DX tranny, will I get better gas mileage since the final drive will be longer? I'm assuming at 5th gear, I'll be cruising at a lower RPM which means I'll probably get better gas mileage. What about acceleration? Is there a big difference between the two tranny's? Will it take me a lot longer to hit VTEC?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

its going to feel totally different than your ex tranny, most likely you will lose some mpg since u will be working it alot more just to get up to speed. if your in a bind do it otherewise i wouldn't.

I swaped out my EX tranny for a DX/delsol S crap and it feels the same, second and third are a little longer but this peice of **** D series is so slow anyway it doesn't matter

and you <U>will</U> get better gas milage...

i went from a cx/dx to the ex tranny, big difference in feel overall to me much closer gearing and i picked up a few mpg. pm mistabone on this he is the d-series tranny guru.

Si - I agree. My car is a beater as well. I don't see how the DX tranny will make the car that much slower under normal driving conditions. I would think there would be a difference if I were racing the car, but I will never race this car. I drive this car 110 miles per day, 5 days a week. I put a lot of miles on this car so I want something that will still give me good gas mileage.

I looked at the gear ratios. The final drive is lower on the DX which should give better gas mileage.

If Mistabone sees this....what are your thoughts?

It trips me out that my friend's b16 swapped DA gets 340~360 miles per tank on a very short tranny. At a cruising speed of 75mph, his b16 is singing @ 4000RPM.

And our other friend's EM1 gets about the same 340~360 miles per tank as well with an equally short tranny.

So it probably won't matter what tranny you put on your single slam...

I'm thinking the same thing bro. I should just tell my mechanic to go ahead and put in the DX tranny. I need my daily back! I actually miss it.

You'll notice the DX tranny most on the 1-2 shift, other than that in a daily, it'll be fine.

Expect to lose OR gain 1-1.5 mpg dependng on your driving habits.

I prefer 3000 rpms @ 70 mph, like my 4 speed automatic LX does

329 miles, 8.4 gallons, 39 mpg, AC off, 80% highway
355 miles, 10.0 gallons, 35.5 mpg, AC on, 60% highway

I appreciate the reply back. Just talked to my mechanic and he said an EX tranny is on the way, so I should have it in by today. I have a feeling the company that my mechanic deals with, sent the wrong tranny again. Oh well, if worse comes to worse, I'll just tell my mechanic to put in the DX tranny.

thats becuase they have the same motor and tranny and weigh almost the same

the DX tranny is going to feel slower than an EX, but you might be able to get 1-2 more mpg, i have to rev up to redline just to keep up to my buddies LS DA when he shifts at like 3500, and i still am slower than him, o btw ive got a 96 CX hatch

Yeah, I also notice it on the 2-3 shift. 4th and 5th feel the same as the EX tranny.

I'm actually impressed by the potential of the d-series tranny after following bense's build up of the f2d...

You missed the point completely...

DA B16 y21 tranny 75mph @ 4000rpm
EM1 s4c tranny same 75mph @ ~3900ish RPM

High cruising RPM while both averaging above 30mpg...

Versus:

Y8 S40 tranny 65mph @ 3000 RPM
Y7 s40 tranny 70mph @ 3000 RPM

Lower cruising RPM while averaging over 30mpg as well...

That's what trips me out...

ok, so i was a little off, sorry, my buddies DA averages a little over 30 mostly highway, where as I have gotten 37mpg almost all interstate with my Y7 tranny, but hes got almost 200k on his B and ive got 140k on my D, but who cares about B right now, hes looking for something for his D, id say get the DX if you want it to be cheaper and slightly better gas millage, or EX is you want better acceleration

Got the car back tonight. The tranny was stamped P4 B000 so I know for a fact that I received an EX tranny. The car runs so much smoother now since I got a ton of other stuff done to it.

P4A/BOOO doesn't mean it's a EX.........

esp when you can do 100+ MPH in 3rd gear.

DX 2-3 1.762&gt;1.172 = 1.503
EX 2-3 1.909&gt;1.250 = 1.527

DX 2-3 is slightly closer

Now a DX 1-2 with ZC 3-4 and CRX Si 5th is fun

So you're saying I have an HX tranny? My mechanic said he ran the VIN on the tranny and it said its from an EX car. Am I getting duped?

Also if it helps out, I'm topping out at 35-3600 RPMs at 80 mph, cruising. That seems to be right compared to my old ex tranny and the car feels pretty much the same as the old tranny when accelerating.

I didn't say you got a new HX tranny, just that news to me all HX trannys were large bearing units for some stupid reason.

I read that thread he posted in about the HX tranny. Seems to me that I have an EX tranny. The acceleration is the same as my old tranny. Thanks for the help everyone.

3050@80mph with 205/50/15s = 3.7222 final with 0.702 5th gear. HX TRANS

3400ish @ 80mph with 205/50/15s = 4.25 final with 0.702 5th gear, EX trans.

Just play with the gear calcs in the stickied tech/misc thread and figure out what you got

I actually just put some 15's on the car 2 days ago. At 80mph, I'm at 34-3500 RPMs. Thanks!
