asking for a friend. Would he need to cut and rewire anything? or would it plug and play? The DX harness that came with the car is all mesed up from the last swap.

Re: 96 Hatch DX with 96 D16y8, would a 97 HX harness plug and play? (SiB16A)
most harnesses will are pretty interchangeable. obviously the hx harness will not have the vtec wiring, but for the most part is *should* work. i can't think of any sensors that a stock hx motor has that a y8 does not have, or vice versa.
Edit: now that I think about it, the wiring for the iacv may be different, as well as some other manifold/throttle body sensors. So I guess I can't answer your question

NO.....
HX will have a 5wire oxygen sensor.....if you use a Y8 and Y7 ECU, it will throw a CEL since those are 4 wire.
HX HAS VTEC already wired

Then you will have to re-wre the harness to 4wire which isnt too hard. I did it in about 15 minutes after reading the helms and tracing the wires and ECu pinouts.

It looks like from my haynes that the HX only has a two wire IACV that is normally found with manual transmissions, autos tend to be 3 wire so depending on the type of ecu you have you might need to convert. In my sig is a link for a really good write up on a mini-me. In it talks about 2 and 3 wire IACV you should check it out.
Another thing is that the HX isn't wired for a knock sensor, seeing how this is obd2. So you need to install one or convert to OBD1.
About the ecu, I didn't see posted what year the ecu was, but make sure that it is a 96-98 ex ecu and not 99-00. They wont plug and play difference is that the 99-00 is OBD2b, however they do make conversions harness for obd2b to obd2a.
besides the oxygen sensor that has been mentioned I believe that about it. any question pm me.

Nope.
My 2000 civic is OBD2A. I bought an OBD2B - OBD1 conversion ahrness and bitche out the seller becuase the **** didnt work. I did some more researching and found out my 2000 wasnt OBD2B but OBD2A

I am using the same ecu that came with the motor. I personally pulled the motor out and was the one who pulled the ecu so yeah the ecu is the correct one.
