96 ek question on gearing

96 ek question on gearing
i got a 96 civic dx hb and im teachin my friend to drive stick in my car and he seems to grind the gears a few times here and there shifting from 4th to 5th and sometimes other gears......whats the worst that can happen if he keeps grinding th gears? sorry for the nub question any advice to give him so he doesnt grind the gears.....im all out of suggestions.......help

The synchros are going to get worn out really quickly. And how can he KEEP grinding the gears? I never grinded while learning. You need to tell him to either shift very deliberately and/or stop trying to shift so damn fast. Also, remind him to keep the clutch pedal in all the way until he's sure the tranny's in gear. Since he's just a beginner, he needs to drive like a beginner, meaning take things nice and slow. Let him know that the more he drives a stick, the easier it'll come to him and to just be patient right now. Can't really expect to shift like a pro when you're just learning, right?

yeah it seems hes tryin to shift super fast like hes racing or something....im going to have to smack some sense into him thankssss fellow honda techers
