Default 96 D16Y8 SOHC VTEC into a 95 DX coupe

I know SOHC VTEC swaps have been discussed all over, but I couldn't really find the specific answers I needed among the mass numbers of archived threads. My friend and I are doing a SOHC VTEC swap on his 95 DX coupe, originally with the D15 1.5L engine. Well I thought he was getting a D16Z6 engine to go in there, which would have been easy stuff, just add 2 wires to the harness and drop that motor in there. Well, turns out he got a 96 D16Y8 engine, which is a little different. Here's what we have observed and also some of my questions:

The driver side engine mount is different between 92-95 and 96-00. The 92-95 mount will bolt to the 96 engine, so I think we're fine there.

He will be using an OBD1 P28 ECU, since that matches the car's body harness. We are also in the process of transferring the D15 engine harness over to the D16Y8 engine. The fuel rail and injectors are transferred over, so the harness plugs will fit that no problem. I also ordered a 92-95 D15 crank pulley (we broke his trying to get it off) to put on the D16, since it only has 2 belt tracks on it (cleaner install, since he has no power steering).

He has also transferred some of the sensors over, like oil pressure, etc. The D16Y8 didn't exactly come complete

What sorts of things should we look for as far as transferring over sensors, plugging in the D15 engine harness into various things on the D16 engine, etc? What about the distributor? TIA

you can rewire the DIST or use your old one...you still gotta wire up the vtec....and the knock if im not mistaken...you also need a vtec ecu.. unless your not worried abou tthat rite now...

we're using an OBD1 ECU (92-95 EX/Si), does that have a place for knock sensor or not?

no knock sensor, use stock d15 mounts, use the p28, run the 2 vtec wires, not sure on the d series but on the b series swaps the plugs are different for alt, so you can either switch out alt or wire up the obd2 plug to the obd1 harness, and as for the dist im not sure if the d15 dist will fit on d16y8, i know it wouldnt fit on my d16z6, but as for that im not sure

Alright thanks, we're using the D15 alternator, so no problems there as far as plugging it in. I'm not real familiar with knock sensors, is there any kind of hole that needs to be plugged if one is not used on the engine or anything?

Well all B18C engines have a knock sensor, whether OBD1 or 2, but I don't think the OBD1 SOHC VTEC engines have one, but the OBD2 SOHC VTEC engines do. Since we are staying OBD1-spec, I was wondering if the hole for the knock sensor on the OBD2 engine needs to be plugged or anything. I don't know what the knock sensor consists of or how it attaches to the engine, that's why I'm asking.

I used 1992 d15b7 distributor on 1999 Y8 head and no problems at all. this way you wont have to mess w/ re-wiring the Y8 distributor to fit your dx harness. hope that helps

theres nothing behind the knock sensor, it's not a plug of any kind, it just screws into a threaded recess on the block. good luck with the swap, mang. keep us posted

So did the 95's have the same D15B7? I don't know all the D-series engine codes so bear with me. Could we use the 95 DX dist. on the 96 EX engine?

from what he said above. yes.... u can use the d15 dist on the Y8. the obd1 harness switches over and u just need to add the a4 and d6 (vtec solenoid and the vtec pressure switch) and u're set. i had to swap a d16y7 (the nonvtec motor from 96+) into my 95 dx hatch b/c my d15 headgasket blew.... it wasnt that hard... i used my d15 dist on the Y7.... good luck! let us kno how it goes!

thanks everyone... he's on his own since I had to come back to school, but he said next time I'm at home it should be close to being ready to go in. He's waiting on a new crank pulley (old one tore apart when we were trying to get the bolt off the old motor and failed). He's also waiting on valve cover bolts, gaskets, etc. Should be a quick car along with the Skunk2 intake manifold, camshaft, and cam gear!
