96-98 DX coupe compared to EX coupe, what makes it 200 pounds lighter?
Here's the scenario, I have a '96 EX coupe, and I'm looking to drops some pounds without spending much on carbon fiber replacement parts, and so far I have about 160 pounds dropped from removing parts. Here's the list
30 lbs - rear seats
30 lbs - passenger seat
35 lbs - sunroof (capped off w/ fiberglass)
15 lbs - floor tar
15 lbs - a/c compressor
10 lbs pwr steering
20 lbs - smaller battery
5 lbs - rear seat belts
Now here's what I don't understand, a '96 DX coupe with everything intact weighs 2300 lbs. where a '96 EX coupe weighs 2500 lbs. How is this possible? Does the sunroof and power windows actually weigh THAT MUCH?

a/c, power steering, sunroof.
/thread.
Base models are listed as base models, not models with options like a/c or p/s.
My dx hatch for instance came with ps and ac. So I'm sure it weighs similar to that of the ex.

A 96-98 Civic DX doesn't have a 1.5 liter engine. It is in fact a D16Y7. A 1.6 liter, single overhead cam, non-vtec engine. There is virtually no weight difference in the engines so thats definitely not it.
I would go with what ek forever guy said. A/C, PS, and a sunroof. Those are probably about it. Other than that a DX is the exact same. Oh, and there are slightly bigger brakes on the EX as well as 2 sway bars, where as the DX has no sway bars. That could also be the weight difference.

These were both dealer options, so the weren't installed at the factory. Thus not adding their weights to the vehicles listed weight.

What else would make it a base model?
It certainly didn't come with all the same amenities and somehow weigh less.
a/c and ps are heavy together when you include fluid also.

I believe it mainly to be the Power Doors, Cruise control, Sun Roof, More plush seats, Power steering, Larger Rotors and the sway bars. When my DX coupe was B16A bone stock it would rip on pretty well modded EM1's. You gotta love the light weight coupe

dx- dealer optional A/C, ps not standard, power nothing (sunroof, doorlocks, windows), no alarm/keyless entry, no swaybars, i think ex had optional abs, but this wasn't an option on dx. not sure about the last one. 13" steelies don't weigh much believe it or not. 14 weigh more.
if you have the original ex exhaust mani, the 96-98 were cast and the 99-00 were welded tubular. they weigh a little less. i like mine. it's nice!
but i bet the extra 40lbs are in the swaybars and power window motors and pdl actuators.

oh really.. sunroof is seriously 35lbs?
I've been seriously thinking about removing mine.
Typically i just go tweaker style and tear things out but i will be selling this car in a year
or two..
Does the sunroof removal f it up? as in.. could you ever put it back in?

nope, it bolts in.. you could probably just remove the glass and do lexan or something.. it wouldn't be worth the 10 or 15 pounds saved IMO

Composites Fab was making a sunroof plug... but they went outta business. It was a full CF piece that plugged up the hole for the sunroof.

No, not for '96-'00. The DX had the D16Y7 while the EX had the D16Y8.

It's not standard.

A/C and power steering were in fact factory options. The only dealer options I can think of for 6th gen Civics are leather seats, painted pinstripes and perhaps tint.
Dealer options are not things that you could just go down to the dealership and order now.
Though CX and DXes and such didn't come standard with A/C or power steering, the dealership could choose to have their vehicles come with A/C if they wanted to do so. For example, a dealership in Florida might have trouble moving DX coupes without A/C.

No, the EX has rear drum.

Re: 96-98 DX coupe compared to EX coupe, what makes it 200 pounds lighter? (jdm_vtec)
Oh, and the weights I have right here for the DX and EX coupes says the EX is between 145 to 171 pounds heavier than the DX depending on the years.
