P0740 aka D4 Code 40 Issues
Bought a ek civic. Its a 1998 Civic EX. Has 312k miles. Go figure.
Everything tested out fine on the test drive. Let my wife drive it one day and this code pops up.
Everything works fine except OD. I do not feel the car engaging into OD.
Shifts fairly smooth through all the gears with no slipping or clunking.
I tested the Lock Up Solenoids. Resistance is right at 14 (Says 12-25 is fine) and when tested with 12v, both portions click.
I "flushed" the fluid once, 2.9Q's, but nothing, code is still coming up and no overdrive.
Then I unpinned both sides to make sure the connectors were fine. Checked out fine.
I do not have a pressure kit for an Auto trans.
Any insight or pretty much worst problem scenario?

With all that you've done so far, I'm assuming you've already looked at a site like this.
If you've ruled out the electrical bit then it does sound like a bad Torque Converter Clutch Soleniod Valve.
One thing to note, 2.9 quarts only changes the fluid in the tranny. The total system is probably closer to 9 quarts.
The usual routine they recommend here is to drain and fill 3 quarts, drive a handful of miles, drain and fill 3 quarts, drive a handful of miles and drain and fill 3 quarts. That pretty much refreshes all the fluid in the system.
The other way is to drain and fill 3 quarts, then disconnect the return line from the tranny, have a buddy start the car up and let it pump out a quart, then shut the car off, add a quart, start the car up, pump out another quart, shut the car off, add another quart and do this until all 6 quarts are back in. Rehook up the return line and run through the gears then check the level and adjust accordingly.
Good luck on your tranny issue.

@Ron, To be honest, I am assuming so. I should probably confirm with the Vin on the trans, but I have no reason to believe its not.
@Tom, I would have done all 9qts, but honestly, I wouldnt think OD would come back by merely flushing a trans. At $30-35 for 3 quarts, I might as well replace the trans with a lower mileaged one at rough $200-300 total cost.

Can't argue that. I would do the same thing at 300,000 miles. It's why I spent a bit more than I like on an old 93 civic to have less than 200,000 kilometers on the automatic tranny.
Was just putting it up being you said you did one drain and fill. Wasn't sure if knew that only touched about a third of the total fluid in the system.

P0740 is basically the death code for a Honda trans.
I rebuilt one of the infamous 3.2L TL V6s trans, when it was pulled it still worked almost perfectly other than very occasionally it wouldn't make the 2nd - 3rd shift. After taking it apart I'm amazed 3rd worked at all. 3rd gear clutch pack was absolutely destroyed to the point where the only thing salvageable was the drum. Piston, spring, thrust bearings, etc all destroyed along with the frictions and steels. People think "It works too good, it can't be the trans!" It is.
