Default 96-00 Civic Mileage Roll Back Question (searched)

Hey people Ive searched and came up with nothing helpful. Im looking to swap an EX cluster into my DX, but Im stuck right now on turning the mileage back to the actual mileage on the car. Does anyone have a link to a good DIY with pictures preferably?

Thanks.

i sense negative feedback coming on this one.. too many law abiding citizens on here to ask questions about illegal **** haha, trust me i've tried... no matter how innocent the question is, people always wanna throw that "its against the law" kinda comment out there, but GL tho...

So its illegal to change the new cluster back to the real miles on the car? But completely legal to have a untruthful number represented on the cluster by not changing it back after swapping a new one in??? Im lost

my friend's dad is a detective who investigates this stuff, as well as things related to sketchy inspection stations. He's told me a couple times a few good places to get my car easily inspected only to go and close the place down in a couple weeks hahah.
But yea, you sound like youre dead on.

the mileage on ur cluster is gonna stay TRUE OEM mileage, just cuz u have a diff motor in there doesnt matter to the registration company lol.. ya kno how when u hear people say how many miles are on THEIR CAR, than on THEIR MOTOR..?? same deal here, changin out the cluster is gonna be dismissing ur cars actual mileage..

In indiana at least, you just check off a box on the title "Odometer reading is NOT actual mileage"

My cluster says 280k, car has ~400K, title reads "exempt" under odo reading header.

I've changed mileage on odometers before, but only by turning ahead. It'd take a long time if you had to rotate >1000000 miles to get to your actual mileage.

Either swap the odo or leave it.

It's totally legal for an odometer to be rolled forward or back in the event the cluster is swapped. The odometer should read the car's actual mileage.

Well like someone above mentioned about "inspection stations"...we have them here of course, only when you buy a car out of state. Besides that we dont need to get "passed" every year like some of you guys on the coasts do. Not sure if that helps or not. I just dont get the whole legal and illegal things, seems *** backwards to me.

Id be more than happy to give OP a walkthrough on how to do this but not in public forum where I can be held accountable for whatever reason... But yeah, some states ***** illegal an some states ***** not so say he told me "i'm using the car for trackuse an dont need mileage charted than i'd help him with a smile cuz thats not illegal...
