Default 95 Honda Civic Ex trasmission problem

i have a manual transmission and when i go above 2,000 rpms on gears 1-3 my car makes a weird sound like the gears are sputtering. i know i have a problem with the tranny but i was wondering if there was something i could do aside from just getting it rebuilt.

would changing the trans oil make that sound go away? or am i screwed into rebuilding it?

Thanks for all ur help

I don't know about your problem your having, But I would figure it would be alot cheaper to get a Ex 5 speed out of a 92-95 civic and install it. I see a few here and there on Craigslist locally running about 100 dollars, and I live in the middle of KY/TN podunk so Im sure you can find one.

I had the same exact problem. Gears 1-3 and over 2 rpm. And when i pressed the clutch, the sound would go away. Change your transmisssion man. I changed mine and its all good now

wouldnt that be a throw out bearing issue? just the thing of pressing in the clutch and the sound goes away. I would change your throwout bearing before anything and see if that works.

yeah thats what happens. as soon as i press the clutch down it stops. so u think changing the throw out bearing. how would the prices differ between that and changing the tran?

Thanks for all the help though. its really helpful

Change the throw out bearing, it's way cheaper than a new (used) transmission, unless you have tons of money to throw away that you don't need too, in that case send it to me!

It won't hurt your transmission, it's a bad bearing. It's known on all hondas 91-00 I believe. It was a design flaw, it's an annoying sound, but it isn't bad for your transmission. Mines been like that for about a year now.

Thats not really true, a bad ISB or mainshaft bearing will ruin the mainshaft eventually, I've seen it happen a couple of times. ISB bearing goes bad and cuts a deep groove in the input shaft where in enters the case.
