Default 95 dx cooling issue

I bought the car knowing it had a cooling issue but put 1500 miles on it before I saw an issue, now I'm starting to see a problem and am thinking the water pump might be bad. Sometimes when I'm sitting at a light or stopped it will get hot then when I give it some gas it will cool off again. The weird thing is sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't.
I replaced the thermostat when I notice the lower hose was cool and the fans not coming on. I'm not sure what would be the cause, if it was a headgasket it would overheEat All the time I would think right? Halp!!!!!!
Sorry the structure sucks I'm on my iPod.. Thanks

Are you losing coolant?

Are the fans coming on?

Heating up at a stand still points to fan, waterpump, blockage or low coolant.

You could have a very small headgasket leak. Take radiator cap of off cold car start and warm it to operating temp (fan comes on twice) then look for bubbles in the radiator.

If so get a block tester from napa ($50) to test for exhaust gas in coolant (stick it in your radiator and see if blue fluid turns yellow). Yellow means crack or bad gasket.

I agree. Check that fan for sure. Not just the fuse but the thermo switch as well.

ya it loses a very tiny amount of coolant, but barely any.
i have only seen and heard the fan come on once since ive owned the car

to me the exhaust does not smell like coolant but i have done the test with the cap off and to me it just doesnt seem like coolant is flowing. It didnt seem to drop when the thermostat opens, it almost seems to just sit there
