Default 95 civic dx overheated and now won't start

ok I let my friend use my civic. 5 speed
he called me and said the car died at a stop sign. but he didn't notice that the car was overheating for a good half hour and it died and would t start up again. allthecoolent leaked out and I already knew there was a leak.

so I decided to get new spark plugs. when removing the plugs they would not come out and it took me 2 hours to get them out. I noticed that there is gasoline in the first spark plug hole down inside

where do I go from now. I've already bought a new thermostat and I'm
doing a compression test on it tomorrow to see if the head gaskets blown.

do a leakdown test also pinpoint>guess. i'd say HG off the bat don't know about the fuel on the plugs did you guys try and start it several times after it died at the light ?

yeah I attempted to start it probably about 5 times. it would almost start every time.
but I checked the oil and it was very dark and not a light tan color like what happens when there is a head gasket problem.

the times you tried could have left the gas on the plugs i wouldn't worry about it. do a comp test and leakdown then you'll know if it's the HG

well the gas wasn't on the plugs, it was only inside the first spark plug hole and the other three were completely dry. I could see a lot of gasoline inside.
does that have to do with a fuel injection problem? or should I still not worry like you said. thank you though for helpin me

tackle the potential HG issue first via leakdown/comp test. the fuel in the hole and (oil ?) could be the result of it. if not it's not a hard problem to figure out the fuel system is pretty simple.

alright thanks. Much appreciated. also my speedometer will work for a little bit every now and then. but will just stay at 0 mph 90% of the time. any clue how to fix that? I'm not sure if it's the speedo cable
or not.

VSS 100% unless you have a pre 94 integra or civic

it will sometimes say I'm goin 100 mph when I'm you like 10 and it hops around a lot. the odometer only works when the speedometer randomly works too. but the trip odometer doesn't match up with mile markers.
do you still think it's the vss?

Yes

try swapping it out with a known good one or it could be lose(dought it) IIRC the civic vss gear was plastic and plastic chips. worth a try replacing it.

lets see, the car was run over heated for half an hour? no coolant? and the spark plugs took 2 hours to get out? does the engine appear to have started melting? go kick your friends *** then do a compression check, these cars can blow a head gasket in five minutes of overheating, let alone a half hour

I'm almost certain it's your gasket...the exact same thing happened to my 95 civic dx...the best of luck with fixing it for cheap

i had a similar situation happen to me. it would probly be a good idea to have your head checked for any warp. alluminum isnt the most resiliant when it comes to heat.

if it really ran for a half hour with no coolant, just start looking for another engine, not even worth opening up, I'm surprised it didn't seize up, does the oil smell like burnt chicken grease now ?

A new(used) motor is your best bet, That motor sounds like it has seen it's last day.
Civic engines are dirty cheap if you know where to look. Just be sure to check the compression/leakdown test on anything before you buy it.
