93 Si rebuild (56k warning)
Well it is finally time to square the body away on the car, the honda rust is eating my car alive. I am posting this to help keep track of the work I do there will be more photos as the work progresses. I have almost all the parts ready to do this job so I thought it was time to start with the used parts I picked up at the salvage yard.
Here is what the rear tail gate looks like that is on the car. If you look at the upper right corner of the photo you can see where the rust is coming through on the lip
look where the wiring bundle enters the tail gait you can see its all rusted out. Same thing with the 3rd photo its rusting all along the lip
So its not worth triyng to fix all that. So I found a good used gate with only a few dents. The worst dent we had to take out is right around the relief for the license plate. It was to deep to putty so we used a stud gun and slide hammer to pull the dent.
as you can see the dent was right along the contour so i spent a lot of time working it out and only had to skim coat it with the filler to finish it off.
The rest of the dents where not so bad so they got a little coat to fill and smooth. I also took all the paint off to have a nice surface to repaint.
With all the hard work done we shot the 2 coats of self etching primer and 3 coats of a high build primer
nice and smooth
now last but not least I dusted the gate with black paint as a guide coat for the wet sanding that I will start next week when the base coat paint comes in.

I had thought of changing the color but I decided to keep it the original I really like the red Honda used. Besides then I dont have to repaint the engine bay.

Re:My 93 Si rebuild (instructor74)
More photo update. After having a real case of sticker shock at the price of Milano Red i final came up with the money for the paint. For anyone that doesn't know red is one of the most expensive colors to paint your car my cost on the paint was just over $165 per qrt. and I still needed the reducers, hardeners, under coat, and primers. I managed to talk myself into mixing a small test batch up and here is what it came out like.
We started with the inside of the tailgate scuffed the blue paint down with what looks like a scotch bright pad removed the small amount of rust under the hinge mount area and sprayed it with a few coats of self etching primer
With all the prep work out of the way on went the first coat of white primer
Okay now time for the color!!! gave the hatch a nice wipe down with a good tack cloth and away we go. We shot 2 coats of red allowing everything to flash
It might be hard to see but once the last coat of color went on we gave the gate 2 coats of clear what a difference
this one is a better shot of the gloss that the clear coat gave us
Should be starting the major body work next week more to come.

constructive criticism in me says: Remove the harnesses before painting
PS i Can relate to the R-81 high costs. I got mine for 100 bucks a qt, shop around a bit.
