'93 Civic Hatch Idle Problem
I've got a '93 civic hatch with a D15B8 in it. It's done this since I bought the car a year ago and it didn't really bother me until recently since I'm going to start driving it daily soon.
What it does is once it's warmed up, it starts to have a fluctuating idle. Since I'm in the process of swapping my cluster I dont't quite know what it's at exactly RPM wise. I'm thinking it's somewhere between 600 and 1500 or so.
Here's a video I took of it...

Any idea of what it is and how I could fix it?

damn dude that sounds rough. Theirs like......4 different noises going on there
Start with the basics, Check your IACV and check for vacuum leaks

First off, and CELs?
Grab a can of carb cleaner and start spraying around the IM, TB, etc. See if you can get a change in idle. If you do, wherever it is, there is a leak.
Try cleaning your IACV, and your FITV.

No CEL's
The reason its so loud is because its just a straight header at the moment.
Pretty sure my car doesn't have a fitv. I've cleaned several of my friends fitv's and I don't see one on my intake manifold... I can post pictures of the I.M. if you guys want.
I haven't tried cleaning the iacv yet because I wanted to see what you guy thought about it first.
Would it mean I don't have a leak if I cover up the throttle body and the car dies? Could I use starting fluid to spray around it? that's the only thing I have right now...

Re: '93 Civic Hatch Idle Problem
I just took the iacv off and it's not the right one for my car, the previous owner made it fit on there so it would work but there was only one bolt holding it in, both bolt holes don't line up.. It was on there awfully tight though, I thought I was going to break the bolt getting it out..
I'll go do the starting fluid test right now and post my results back here

Re: '93 Civic Hatch Idle Problem
Well I finally got some carb cleaner today so I started spraying it around my intake manifold and it didn't mess with the idle til I got to the iacv. I took it off and found out that it's not even the right one for my car.....

This is what my car had on it,
Map Sensor
Yellow/Green
Green/Blue
Pink/White
TPS
Yellow/White
Red/Black
Green/White
This is a '93 CX Hatch, I don't know if that has anything to do with why maybe the colors aren't the same....

Re: '93 Civic Hatch Idle Problem
I just cleaned the IACV that's on there and it's still idling the same, it's not revving as high but it is still doing it. I would have cleaned the fitv today too if my car had one..
I'm not really sure where to go from here, other than getting the right IACV but everywhere I've looked (ebay, HondaMarketplace on here, my local forum's for sale threads) no one has one for sale for my motor...

Re: '93 Civic Hatch Idle Problem
Since I'm having a hard time finding the iacv specific to my motor, could I just use some gasket maker and put it around the very outside edge of the iacv that's on there to get a better seal on it or would I be wasting my time?

Re: '93 Civic Hatch Idle Problem
My H22A idled fine for 3-4 years before we decided to put nitrous on it. We REMOVED the intake manifold and installed the jets. Then put the intake manifold back on. Engine idle was all over the place, up & down, up & down. I torqued the intake manifold bolts per spec in the manual and also followed the tightening sequence. Idles perfect again !!!!!!!!!!

Re: '93 Civic Hatch Idle Problem
I'm going to in the long run but at this exact moment I can't afford to buy a brand new iacv which is a $167 dollar part from my local O'Reillys. I'm just looking looking for a temporary fix so I can actually start driving my car.

Re: '93 Civic Hatch Idle Problem
Actually, 97H22AEK, you just gave me an idea. I have a d16z6 intake manifold because I'm eventually going to do a z6 mini me swap.
In theory, couldn't I just mount up that intake manifold and it would fix my idle and I would have a little more power (I know it won't be much of a power gain at all but anything will be better than what I've got now) It's complete with all the sensors and throttle body and everything. It should just be as simple as bolting it up and plugging the sensors in right?
Would this work or is my theory wrong?
