93 Civic - Cluster only lighting up once in a while
Hey guys,
Just installed my Si cluster in my 93 civic hatch.
My issue is the gauge cluster lights only come on once in a while, even when the dx cluster was in there it did it too.
Does anyone know what could cause this? I get the CEL and all the when I have the car in the 2nd key position, but no instrument lights.
I checked the instrument panel fuse under the dash and it was good.
Is there a way to take a wire from a switched ignition point in the car, and run it to the illumination wire on the cluster so they cluster lights come on? I dont know, Im stumped lol
Any help would be appreciated.

Pry the dimmer switch out of the dash; unplug the dimmer switch connector; jump the Red wire to the Blk wire in the connector. Do the cluster lights now work fine?

Same thing was happening on my old 93 si, then the lights eventually stopped working all together. It's easy and worth a try anyways.

Okay I will try that Ron & Jason... However the gauge lights decided to turn on for me earlier this evening and the dimmer switch dimmed them and brightened them like it should.
Could it still be that dimmer switch?

Is that something bad to do?
Does the climate control have its own power wire going to the lights? As it never comes on at all. I was thinking of just wiring it up to ignition power.

The cluster lights up fine with the dimmer switch connector jumped.
The climate control never comes on. Once in a while it will if you move the fan speed slider back and forth lol

Maybe the dimmer switch connector is bad. You can just permanently splice the red wire to the black wire if you don't mind having the lights shine at full bright all the time.
You also might want to check for a loose connector at the rear of the heater control unit. And check for burnt out bulbs while you're in there.

That's what im going to do, going to splice the red wire to the black wire. I don't mind them being on full force all the time. EG dash lights are nothing compared to the dash lights in my Cadillac DTS. They take the eyes out of you at night.
Ill check the connecters on the back of the heater control unit, and check the bulbs.
Thanks Ron
