92 VX Confused?
My buddys got a bone stock 92 vx (z1) he is having a weird issue. He says it pulls fine through first and second but in 3rd gear it all of a sudden loses all power after 3k. I have no idea. He says its only in 3rd gear so far. Any Ideas?

Yeah my VX pulled in 1 and 2 also, then started to slow down in 3, 4 &5... My VX tranny went out the other day. Tell him to get an Si tranny or a D16Z6 swap like me, I'm in the process of doing mine this moment

I think we may need a little more info to solve the problem.
the problem I had with my tranny was it was whining in 1st and 2nd it poped outta gear when I let off the gas cuz the syncros were all fucked. It doesn't really sound like he needs a new tranny.

my tranny was messed up too.... kept winding and slipping in a couple gears... soo right before i swapped it, i took the car down the block and mashed it in 2nd gear... 30 some seconds later i hear a big bang... 2nd gear broke... sooo popped it in first and drove home, pulled out the tranny and lots of chunks of metal falls out... swapped in a cx tranny (feels just like the vx tranny)...
now im also working on a d16z6... going to do new gaskets or rebuild if i get some money.

How many miles on the car?
If over 130k it's possible the 3rd gear or the final drive is going out. The car is also a few years shy of being as old as me.

I have never even heard of a final drive wearing out. That's like wearing out a connecting rod.
Sounds like the clutch is slipping. Keep in mind that the vx 3rd gear ends at like 130, that car is very very weak with that 92hp d15z1.

Ok. So what would be your recommended fix. Cause it sounds to me like your king **** when it comes to trannys (bense) no joke. So just throw on a dif tranny and go from there. Or just say f it and go ls swap?

If LS swap is even an option for you, LS swap by far over getting a different tranny for that peice.

Since it is dying out at +3k rpm I would check to see if it is going into vtec, vtec-e, or 16valve mode however you want to think of it. 3k is the crossover point so maybe it is not locking in the four extra intake valves and is running on the 16 valve timing and fuel curve while still on 12 valves past 3k rpm going rich and bogging?

I don't think that there's anything wrong with the transmission. It could be a slipping clutch, but then his RPMs would shoot up, which it doesn't sound like that.
I mean nobody is going to be able to diagnose anything until he verifys that everything else is in check
plugs
wires
sensors
ignition timing, etc.

That's what I was thinking, it's probably running on the 12 valves or whatever it is and choking the **** outta the engine past VTEC-E engagement.
Though that'd throw a CEL...

It's possible, but I think he'd notice his RPM jumping or the engine sound not being in sync w/ the power (it's usually pretty obvious).

I've heard that if you put the z1 head on the z6 block you have 180 hp at 11:1 compression.
