Re: (Toolman)
warmer the climate you can use thinner oil but the colder the climate the thicker the oil you want its better for the motor that way

That is total misinformation. You want a lower viscosity (thinner) oil in winter to aid in startup. My manual recommends 5W-30 all year, but it says you can substitute 10W-30 in summer and 5W-20 in the winter.

Re: 5W-20 oil (5genciv)
a quick teaching.....if its cold were u are 5w-20 is good, in the cold weather the oil acts like a 5 weight when hot it acts like a 20 weight....which means ur car will star easier in the cold but it will not be protected during high temps and high revs......i read the manual.......i live in lawrence ma, weather here changes often so i use 10w-30 in the winter.....10w-50 in the spring ...and 20w-50 in the summer , if u have nice weather and hot sunny days , and u race use 20w-50 it protect at high temp, and high revs....and less noisy when redlining...makes a big diiference.. try it wont hurt the engine just protect it. holla back pce

Thats cool...i have a friend that lives in eagan...but yeah as far as the oil, i would just go 5w-30 all year round...and depending on how many miles you have, go synthetic.

Thanks AutoXer for setting the record straight. Thick oil is murder in engines in cold weather.
In short, the 5W-20 oils protect most engines really well ... because they add extra additives like moly (Pennzoil, Chevron, etc ...) or boron (Motorcraft) to compensate for the reduced hydrodynamic film barrier.
Typical 5W-30 oils shear down to a 5W-20 in about 1,500 miles then gradually thicken back up over the next few thousand miles. This is by design as thinner oils offer slightly better fuel economy. 10W-30 is a bit more stable, but even that stuff tends to thin out fairly quickly.
