41.4 mpg highway
I just want to gloat, and say that my 93 DX hatch got 41.4 mpg on my last trip from San Diego to Whittier and back on the 5 between 10 and 3PM. Yes, this is an accurate number (not to the tenths place though). I've been getting between 36-38 driving this car to work and back, but this last trip was purely highway. I record my mpg on every fill up, and yes I calculate it correctly. The amazing thing is that I did 70-80 mph the whole way w/out cruise control, and that my car isn't tuned for mpg like some people are planning for their cars. 41mpg highway and yet I spank hybrids on the 1/4 mile *joke.
How did I do it? I'm not completely sure, but removing PS had the most impact. And the maintenance is completely up to date. Everything, even the fuel pump sock. Even the injectors have been balanced and blue printed. Here are some details about my car. I think this will clear up some myths about mpg.
Chevron 87 octane
Mobil 1 5W20 full synthetic
SOHC ZC Vtec equivalent to D16Z6
automatic?!!
AEM cold air cut down to short ram where a hole rubbed through
bumper cutout and half *** attempt at ram air
heat insulation wrapped around intake
FITV and IACV coolant bypass
Magnaflow muffler
DC header
Carsound high flow cat
2.25 piping
full interior
autopower roll bar
OEM hood, seats, etc
tool box and small sub in hatch (Infinity basslink II)
four wheel integra brake conversion
GSR front swaybar, Progress 24mm rear with reinforced end links
*in other words, weight isn't such a big factor as people think, not when it's less than 200 lbs. I'm not sure what the car weighs
front pass seat was out (I'm in the middle of something)
11lb battery
no rear speakers
no AC
some other minor weight reductions
VX rear diffuser
bad alignment (I'm in the middle of something)
bad tires 195/50/15 Kumho
36 psi front, 34 rear
rotas
1.75 inch drop in front, about 1.6 in back
That's all I can think of that's even remotely related. Questions are welcome. Doubters can come for a ride along. Flamers, go live up to the true meaning of "flamer" or what it meant when I was in HS.

Re: 41.4 mpg highway (BubbaPhu)
Significantly lower in the city. Last time I used enough gas purely city driving was a long time ago. But right now I only use this car to get to work and back and average 36mpg. Still feels like getting *** raped at the pumps though, over $30 to fill the tank with 87 octane. I can't wait to get new tires and sort out the alignment.
I have a turbo EE wagon automatic that gets 31mpg highway at speeds above 80mph. I have a stock EF Si hatch that gets 38 mpg highway. I LOVE MY HONDAS.
You guys driving stick should be able to surpass me.

Re: 41.4 mpg highway (suspendedHatch)
I also get 40+mpg on my ZC VTEC hatchback with complete interior. I was chatting with Suspendedhatch and it was hilarious because both of use have the same mods on our cars. ZC VTEC with DC header, AEM CAI cut to short ram, magnaflow muffler, carsound cat and we both run 87 octane.

Re: (brmiddle)
I got 43 mpg on my last tank that was majority highway, but I have been playing with crome leaning it out other than that it is a bone stock 94 si hatch. Pretty good I think

Re: 41.4 mpg highway (suspendedHatch)
I have a 94 DX hatch and average 35.8 city and just over 40 highway. Thats one of the great things about Hondas, I drive the crap out of my car and still get great mileage.

40+mpg is great!!! Ive somehow been getting low 30s with my EM1, and thats a mix of highway and city driving. Of course I have been driving conservatively so thats a big help.

I'm averaging 30-34 around town on my too-short 10 mile round trip to work in my bone stock 95 EJ1 (AC, PS, etc) 5-speed. The highway is kinder...36-38mpg if it's not stop and go. My personal best was 58ish mpg, on a trip from Chicago to Atlanta. An entire tank at 65mph (cruise control) on in the dead flat parts of IN and IL gets you a looooong way. Of course, that's never happend since, and I did it when the car only had 42k on it. Everything is on the local Mobil 89 octane, no tuning except for a degree or two of timing added to counteract the 135k on the motor.

Cool. Let's see some specs and anything you think is related for all the cars getting over 40 mpg. Otherwise it's just another annoying "how much mpg do you get" thread.
Removing the PS made a huge difference. If you do it right, it doesn't make the car difficult to steer. Just get a clutch resevoir at the junkyard, some PS hose, clamps, 2 vacuum t fittings, order the rack to hose adapter fitting* and loop all the lines to the resevoir. You could just keep your stock resevoir, but you have to get the pump and cooler out of the loop. Removing the AC compressor didn't make any difference until I removed the condenser. I don't completely understand it but I think either it's an aerodynamic thing or just the drop in underhood temps.
Damn, I was thinking I'd have to get an EMS and an HX head before I got numbers this good.
*search to find out exactly which part this is. It's a 14.5x something something...

Ebay CAI with K&N filter
Magnaflow 2.5" cat
Skunk2 cat-back
Megan Racing springs/ rear LCAs
No power steering
No AC
Bosch platinum 2 plugs
Mobil1 5w30 synthetic
11.4lb chrome moly flywheel
Some other stuff too, but nothing that helps/hurts MPGs.
Oh yeah...87 octane gas

I attribute the 44mpg to nonstop driving on the freeway from San Jose to Anaheim. From experience, the more your car is on the freeway, the more mpg you'll get.
Anyways, I had went up to San Jose to buy a 94 Civic EX coupe. At the time, it had:
Iceman short ram intake on stock D16 motor (manual transmission)
A/C and washer reservoir removed
custom exhaust piping with Ultra Flo muffler
Freshly tuned up with:
-Fresh Oil Change & Filter
-New Spark Plugs
-Brakes lines flushed with DOT4 fluid
-Newer O2 sensor
-Newer Catalytic converter
-Newer Tires
-Newer clutch

Constant speed (cruise control)
Manual transmission (not that it matters when the tq converter is in lockup on a slushbox...)
Flat ground (easy to find in the midwest)
No power robbing accessories turned on (A/C, headlights, etc, were off)
Really, that's all it took for me. Well, that and a car that was relatively young (42k). If I had the time and a reason, I think I could probably get close again, 90k later.
