2007 Si Sedan axleback on a 1997 DX Hatch
Hi everyone,
I’ve been on here for a while, but never post, just look up info.
I’ve recently been plagued by a somewhat loud EBay muffler, which is ok, but just a tad too loud for daily driving.
I figured an OEM muffler from a 2007 Si would do the trick, as the car makes 200hp and it shouldn’t be restrictive, while maintaining acceptable sound levels.
So I bought one used on eBay from a 4-door 2007Si for $110 shipped. It’s a steal, as they are more than twice as much from Honda, and it’s basically brand new, as the car it came off of is new.
The bolt on affair is pretty easy, the only difference is that the 4-door axle-back piping is a little long on the actual “inlet” side, compared to the EK axle-back, which makes the shiny muffler tip stick out a good 4 inches behind the bumper. The solution is to either cut the inlet piping (easy, cutting the straight piece) and re-welding it, or cutting the “outlet” piece, which would involve re-welding the little bracket that hold the muffler tip (shiny chrome tip) to the outlet pipe. For now, I went the ghetto way, and just took the shiny muffler tip off, so it doesn’t look like the outlet sticks out much. I do plan on cutting the inlet piping and re-welding it, as this should solve any fitment issues I have right now. Those are:
- The muffler itself has two hangers but they are oriented toward the muffler center, vs. the EK ones that are more towards the outside (see pic).
- The muffler inlet piping/axle-back piping may interfere with the rear sway bar (if you have one, and if it’s a larger diameter, mine is 21mm). You have to center it so that it doesn’t hit the sway bar link on the right and the sway bar itself on the left (see pic).
Other than that, the gaskets can be either stock donuts if you have the stock cat-back, or you can buy some gasket material and cut your own out like I did. You have to of course slightly trim the rear bumper, as the muffler doesn’t have the same center as the stock one. This is very easily done with some metal-sheet cutters, and takes less than 5 mins. Btw, the gaskets are not made out of cardboard, it’s real ceramic exhaust gasket material with a layer of steel in between.
The sound is very nice, and not too annoying, just a tad louder than stock Si, due to my 2.5” stainless cat-back piping and header. I am glad Honda keeps making things that fit older generations of their cars. The muffler is both lighter and more compact that my SS EBay one, so there’s another plus. A good upgrade for anyone considering a well-flowing, OEM, quiet alternative to other brands. If it’s good for the 200HP Si, it’s sure good enough for most of us out there (N/A anyway).
A sound video is here:
http://video.google.com/videop...hl=en
Also, if anyone has any idea, if the Si Coupe axle back “inlet” piping is shorter than the Si Sedan, maybe someone would have an easier time installing one.
Hope this helps someone who is looking for exhaust alternatives.
Comments welcome.

thanks man. yeah i have the muffler welded on the pipe directly . and the reason i like s2000 oem muffler is because it is twin loop design

on a stock s2k it sounds pretty quite.. but since its dual exhuast on the s2k thats prolly why its more quite.. imo i like the 07 si exhuast alot.. it looks and sounds close to the es oval. jus my .02

i have a 04 RSX Type S Muffler on my 99 EK...it is very quiet and it feels real nice when opened up.... heres a pic IMO i think it looks alot cleaner than the 07 SI Sedan axleback on a Ek Hatch

What kind of work was involved with putting an RSX muffler on the EK?
Did you get the muffler and then weld axleback piping so it matches the catback piping on the EK? Did it bolt up without any mods?

u have to get it welded by a muffler shop..either weld onto the stock piping or weld a flange on the axleback muffler so it can be direct bolt on.

Btw, those Si muffler tips are all interchangeable, you can buy an OEM round one (like the RSX) and swap it out (one bolt) instead of the oval one. For now I like to avoid a tip (sticks out), but if I reweld it later to be the correct length, I'd get the round one as well.
It bolts up right to that little hinge on the bottom of the outlet pipe. Ebay has a few that are OEM and various shapes.

Re: (sil80drifter)
I'm not really diggin the 07 si exhaust, unless you shorten it or something. The way it sticks out is ugggg. That RSX-S exhaust looks very nice though.
I bet that stock S2000 exhaust flows very well, considering numerous people put aftermarket exhaust on their S2000 and never really gain anything, but noise.

Re: (goforbroke)
i picked up a full axel back K series exhaust (07 SI) and cut and welded it on my eg and couldnt stand the way the tip look.. u have to stuff so much under the rear bumper that it sticks out pretty far.. so i took off the oval tip .. did a little cutting and stuck on an rsx exhast tip and it looks A-Ok.. im not running a resonator right now so it sounds like i stuck rocks in my muffler when i take off .. but at least when im driving down the freeway i can hear my self think!! ill put up some pictures asap.. stock muffers + honda=

Can anybody else verify this?
^If that's true, then I'm going to see how the Si oval looks, if I don't like it, then I'll scoop the Type-S one (brand new from the dealer is ~$40)
I'm waiting until I get some spare cash (part-time job, full time school SUCKS), then I'm ordering a high-flow cat to replace my test pipe...then it's off to the muffler shop to get my '07 Si axle back welded up to my current 2.25" system.

Re: (the slow and the serious)
they'll all fit.. but the SI tip has a weird bracket that hangs down.. all u have to do is grind it off and stick a longer screw to hold on the tip and ur good to go..

Re: (jus_spooln_wicha)
Weird bracket on the tip itself?
I need to go look at mine...I opened it once a couple weeks ago when I got it and haven't opened it up since
