2002 civic SI open area in dash is for?????

2002 civic SI open area in dash is for?????
can anyone solve this? I have a 2002 civic SI and would like to have a cassette(yes really!) deck put in the empty space in the dash- I am told that the 2003 can accomodate this wish, but not the 2002. I would so appreciate an answer. Honda dealer has not helped.
